A recommendations for movers?

Can't Post | Private Reply
Hi all,

We are moving from So Cal to Quintana Roo (south of Cancun) in early April and are having a tough time finding movers that will even go to Mexico. The few we have found are unknown to us. Can anyone share a moving company they had good dealings with, good prices from or general good vibes from?

We are not moving much but it is more than will fit in the back of a camioneta.

Thanks for the collective wisdom

We just used Bekins. Since they are nationwide, there should be a branch near you. We had mixed results.

Physically the move was handled well. Both the pick up crew and the delivery crew did a very good job and we were very pleased with that part. The shipment arrived with no damage and nothing lost. We did all the packing except for furniture so we could prepare the detailed menaje de casa listing, but the crews did a good job of wrapping the furniture.

Administratively the move had some problems. They missed the estimate by a considerable amount (although since we didn't have a huge amount of stuff the cost difference wasn't a huge problem for us). And they had several administrative lapses (on both sides of the border) that wound up costing a couple of additional weeks in delivery time (we wound up getting caught up in the Xmas/New Years holiday shutdown, and did a rather poor job of keeping us informed of the progress during this time.

Bekins uses several movers on this side, so you may wind up with a different Mexican moving company. Ours was handed off to Moreno International (out of Monterrey) at the border.

While we were ticked about the additional cost and the delay in delivery, the stuff arrived intact, which in the end is the most important thing (at least for us).

I would think that other large international movers, like Allied, would also be able to handle the move.

Your mileage may vary, but this was our experience.

We've used Allied, and we've used Gou http://www.mudanzasgou.com.mx/portada.asp?idi=ing, both with good results. And we skipped the insurance.

When I made the move, we vetted practically every moving company in the phone book. Some professed no knowledge about an international move, one claimed there were no roads in Mexico, and yet another insisted that the best route to Morelia was over water from New Orleans or something like that.

But now I have to tell you my heart-warming story about the sterling goblets. I had packed the dozen in a box, marked "Silver goblets, not to go with the mover, goes in the Suburban." And then I forgot about them, until I realized they weren't in the Suburban, and by then it was too late. Two weeks later, when the moving van arrived, and I'd forgotten about them all over again in the madness, the driver reached inside the cab, handed them over to me, and said "I think you may have been looking for these."
