A Few Days in Morelia

We are going to see the butterflies next week and want to see Morilia as well.

Questions:

Can someone recomend one or two reasonable hotels that will let us stay with our large dog?

Is the centro too crowded for the dog?

How long does it take to drive from Morelia to the butterflies? If we start early can we get back to Morelia that night?

There is, of course, lots of stuff in the forum, but any additional hints would be welcome.

Please do not come see the butterflies next week. Millions have been killed by the snow, and there's still snow on the ground. It is recommended that visitors wait until late February or the first fifteen days of March to visit the butterflies.

The Villa San Jose accepts dogs.

The Centro Historico is definitely not the place to bring a large dog. If you want to walk your dog, the park near the Planetarium and Convention Center is much, much better.

Yes, it's possible to make an easy daytrip from Morelia to the butterflies, allowing two hours each direction in driving time.

We are also planning to come to Michoacan for the butterflies, but not till the 3rd week in February. Unfortunately we cannot change our plans now. What is the current temp in Morelia and in the butterfly sanctuary area? Snow is not a problem since we are from Oregon. Will we need chains for our rent a car or are we talking light snow? Are the sanctuaries open, including the site where you can rent horses? Appreciate your response to so many questions. Thanks, N. Lara

Chains? I don't think I've ever even seen chains in Michoacan! The snow isn't enough to require chains. The response here is to simply close the road. The snow is light, but even a light snow is a very heavy matter in this part of the world, and even more so for butterflies. The sanctuaries were closed for a few days.

Check http://www.mimorelia.com/ for weather updates.

By the third week of February, the cold snap should be over.
