Bringing Oregon High School music students to Guanajuato

Three teachers will be bringing 68 HS music students to Guanajuato in early June. We need help with specific places to take our kids to immerse in local culture and life. Addresses, gate fees for museums would be helpful. We will be doing concerts and performances also. Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks

Is there a local contact in Guanajuato that can provide more details?

I was only in Guanajuato once and I doubt that what impressed me would be relevant to high schoolers. The state tourism office is at turismo@guanajuato.gob.mx and Lonely Planet's tourist book on Mexico has a lot of information--what I know I learned from that book.

Driving on the underground roads through the city which are on the former river path was fascinating and eerie. The funicular to the top of the El Pipila monument is a must-see. (A post just a few down from here on Allende talks about El Pipila.) The grainery where the Spaniards hid out when they learned the revolutionaries were coming in 1810, only to be massacred in the first major battle of that revolutionary war, is the big historical site of the town.

All the steps leading up to the University are dramatic and I bet the kids will love racing up them. Teatro Juarez is magnificent and will probably have some sorts of entertainment while you are there. The open markets downtown will be interesting even to kids.

Wish I could tell you more but I suggest you get Lonely Planet Mexico for all the details on the costs and hours of the museums and such. Maybe someone else on this forum will know more about Guanajuato.

It's a beautiful city and just walking around the central garden people-watching will be enjoyable for everyone. Warn the kids that they will be surrounded by vendors hawking all sorts of goodies, and a firm "No, gracias" may have to be repeated several times.

With a group that size you should be able to negotiate a good rate on a tour to include the abandoned mine, the mummies, the old hacienda (torture chamber), and one of the most beautiful churches I have seen. That age group should find this part of the history very fascinating.

Have a great time.
