Restaurants, moderate price hotels - Patzcuaro

: Please do post your experiences to this board!
Okay, here goes:
Just Patzcuaro right now - if anyone is interested in Uruapan, let me know. When we travel, we don't spend 700+ pesos a night on hotels (Mansion Iturbe), much as we might enjoy it! So here's a list of hotels we looked at &/or stayed in. Lonely Planet is our favorite guidebook, but we found the price information not too accurate (Sept. 2000 edition).
Of the ones we looked at, the best moderately priced hotel was Posada de San Rafael, on the south side of the main plaza. They have some king bed rooms (you have to ask) which are good sized, with cable tv, though the bathroom was very small. Comfortable bed, windows on both sides of the room & in the bathroom, clean and pleasant. Price was 290 pesos, a bargain in comparison to others we saw. We stayed our last night here.
Arriving at 12:00 on Friday is not the best time since Patzcuaro is very busy on weekends. The Posada had only one room definitely available (wouldn't know if had another til after 1), and the couple traveling with us took that one. Double bed plus a twin, no tv, larger bathroom than the king room, 280 pesos. They were happy with the room.
Since we'd already found Los Escudos had no 2 person, 1 bed rooms left (except for one small, dark room, no exterior windows, double bed, 330 pesos), we were anxious to find a room. 4 years ago we stayed at Mision San Manuel, and so checked there. 2 person, 1 bed rooms were 400 pesos, king bed 450 pesos, 2 beds 500 pesos, which is high for what they offer. It's a beautiful old monastery building, but they don't seem to put much into the rooms. We were first shown the king room at the front of the hotel - quite dreary looking. Then, we asked to see the room we stayed in before which has a double bed, huge bathroom and two large windows opening onto an interior courtyard. With one of us being 6'2" a double bed is a tad small, but we took it and paid 2 nights. Later we discovered the sheets didn't really fit - the bottom fitted sheet wouldn't stay on the mattress because it wasn't big enough. Top sheet only reached the top edge of the mattress. Lumpy pillows, one with stuffing coming out, no mattress pad. There was a tv, but only 12 cable channels (San Rafael had 44 or so). Towels very threadbare. We asked for larger sheets, and eventually, after several attempts, did get a bottom sheet which did not pop off and a "king" top sheet, which seemed only slightly too large (we had to make the bed ourselves since the maids were gone, and the desk staff didn't do that type of work). All these details only to show that the price seemed quite high for what they offer.
We also looked at Mandala, near Casa de Once Patios - they have 2 upstairs rooms with private baths. We saw one, and it was quite acceptable, opening on to an upstairs terrace with chairs and a view over the rooftops. Their price of 330 pesos includes breakfast; the rooms already were reserved. Downstairs they have 3 rooms which share a bath - we didn't check these out, but they might work for people traveling together.
We looked at a room at Hotel de la Concordia, across from plaza Gertrudis Bocanegra. Apparently the rooms recently have been renovated. A king bed, with tv, no windows, no character, was 360 pesos.
Quick review of restaurant experiences: Mandala has vegetarian and chicken dishes, average prices, very tasty food, service on the slow side. We tried to eat there another time for breakfast, but they weren't open at 8:30, think they don't open til 9.
El Primer Piso - food and service good, more expensive than average. Salads especially good.
El Patio - good breakfast specials, moderate prices, dinner was fine (though nothing to get excited about), service good.
Posada de la Basilica restaurant - no combination specials for breakfast, so juice & coffee are extra making it more expensive than average. Food was barely average, service inadequate. Fabulous views through lots of windows.
Dona Paca in Hotel Mansion Iturbe - had Sunday lunch here around 2:00, and though Patzcu
