Mexican Auto Insurance

Can't Post | Private Reply
Hello!

Has anyone had dealings with this company? http://www.mexican-autoinsurance.com -- fellow's name is Mexican Bob (that's what he calls himself) and he seems very nice. I have quoted from several agencies (including medical and legal aid) and he has the best prices.

I am about to buy a six month policy from him... thought I would check and see if anyone else has used this company? He is connected with Seguros Tepeyac in Mexico and has worked with them for over 29 years

Thanks!

Things to think about:

1. Sometimes it is less expensive to buy insurance prior to crossing the border that covers you in Mexico for the few days you're on the road to your destination and THEN find a local insurance agent for coverage for the balance of your stay.

2. Be very careful about buying Mexican insurance online. The prices look good, but are frequently not for the coverage you really want. For example, a friend bought from an online company believing that her insurance coverage was comprehensive; when the policy was faxed to her, it was in fact for third-party liability only. The company was willing to change it~but the price for comprehensive was astronomical.

3. It's helpful to have an insurance agent whose office you can go to for help in the event you need it, rather than one you can't get to in a pinch.

Here is what is included... is this enough?

You would be covered for $50,000 for property damage, $50,000 per person and $100,000 total for bodily injury, $2,000 per person
and $10,000 total for medical payments, collision, upset, total theft, natural disasters (fire, lightning, wind, hail, earthquake and flood) and legal services (legal aid and bail bond).

You would be given a toll free number direct to the Mexican Insurance Company to report a claim 24/7. They in turn would dispatch an adjuster to you wherever you are in Mexico. You would also have a toll free number for the legal services.

I bought insurance from Bob for several years. He also owns a reputable insurance company in Tucson and Nogales, Az. At one time, I had to cancel my insurance because I sold the car and without any hassle, I got my refund. I've delt with him in person and via email. Although I never had a claim against his policies I felt he was trustworthy.

This is not a game--in Mexico, if you are in an accident that causes injury or damage, unless your insurance company shows up pronto, you go to jail--even if it was not your fault. I use the Mexican subsidiary of GE Insurance, and it is reasonably priced and includes attorney's fees if needed--another useful item. You can pay quarterly, so you can end it whenever you need to.

I have been advised of that (going to jail unless your insurance co bails you out right away), and don't by any means think this is a game -- but y'all are scaring me half to death anyway.

There's no reason to be scared. The insurance coverage you delineate sounds just fine, you have a recommendation from someone on this board who's used your agent. Drive defensively and you should have no trouble at all.

Esperanza, thank you thank you thank you.

We will be driving daylight hours, toll roads where existing, from Nogales - Ajijic. Car goes in the garage and we bus/walk. We have an 11-year-old dog which is why we decided to drive instead of fly....

I appreciate everyone's advice! Thank you :)

I bought insurance on-line from an outfit in Beverly Hills. It was very cheap. But your post has got me to thinking. What do you mean by the police requiring your insurance company to show up on the spot? Does that mean you must be able to contact an emergency number for them to talk to? I am not questioning your accuracy, but I would like to find out more about police SOPs in the case of auto accidents. (If there is such a thing as an SOP in Mexico.) I am certain they would not call an 800 number in the States, and I don't believe my company provides an emergency number in Mexico.

I had wondered when I bought this insurance what the catch was. It was so much cheaper than insurance from a Mexican company. Maybe this is the catch.

My company will send an adjuster to the scene anywhere, anytime--that's actually the standard here--at least for Mexican insurers. I have a 800 number to call. I haven't needed to use them, but others I know have.

I was under the impression that you could not buy vehicle insurance from a local mexican company that was not affiliated with a US company, I am very much interested in this info, as I keep a vehicle in Mexico for as much as 6 months a year and only return to renew the sticker and extend my permit
