Is it possible/feasible to function without a car in Morelia?

My guess would be that 200,000 already do, but Ms. Rose will let us know as that is her home.

Sorry. Guess others don't feel your question has merit.

It is easy and the norm in Mexico not to own a car. Much cheaper too. There is no place that does not have outstanding public transportation and cheap fast drayage.

The desirability and comfort level of living in Morelia without a car would depend upon your location and lifestyle. Nearly all of the expatriate English-speaking community has private transportation.

From my several trips to Morelia, I can say you can go most anywhere without the use of a car. Depending on your budget, taxi’s and the perennial bus system can get you wherever you want to go. It will take some planning and knowledge of the bus routes if you choose that mode. I enjoy hoofing it across the downtown section. There is no better way to experience the place than with your feet to the pavement. I am amazed at the street traffic. From my gringo perspective driving ( and riding with a driver ) seems like chaos: next to no signage, tiny street markings - a seemingly free for all adventure. Yet, the traffic halts for all pedestrians and the drivers are as courteous as can be. Amazing by Chicago standards ( my biggest city analogy ). You’d be honked, cursed and maybe more with the same style of driving.

My wife and I have visited Morelia on three occaisions for periods of around two weeks in length. We have never rented [or owned] a car. Jennifer may be acustomed to the pace, as are - no disrespect intended - all 16 year old Morelianos and your friendly cab driver. I would find it too hectic - different signs for traffic control in a different language and an entirely different attitude to how to drive. Topes are not optional in Morelia and yet are a rarity in Ottawa. I have driven in Germany and found it not overly pleasant either. I may have given myself away when I said I live in a city of around a million and will admit I take a bus to work - as does my wife - and we own two cars. The buses are good in Morelia, the cabs generally efficient and there are collectivos - though we have not figured out the grid system and do not use them. I think you can get along just fine ---in ---- Morelia without a car. In point of fact, it is rather pleasant not to have the obligation, expense or worry. Regards, Michael in Ottawa

It is very possible to live or visit Morelia without a car. My wife and I visited Morelia this summer and spent about two weeks there without a car. Bus transportation is constant. Taxi's are very inexpensive. 25 peso in City and about 35 pesos to places outside the city limits. I think if you lived there for a short time you would get to know the bus routes.

I also rented a car in Mexico and drove to Lake Chapala area and then back to Morelia. I think in general it would be necessary to have a car in Lake Chapala area although there are buses that go up and down the main route along the lake.

Riding in taxis in Morelia is almost as fun as some rides in Disney World. Hold onto your seat and close your eyes. Apparently there is some method to the madness but I couldn't figure it out. I think it's, boldest goes first or something like that.

Regards

Bill
