I am hoping to visit Michoacan for the guitar festival with my family in August. I would welcome any advice you can give about what would make a good itinerary and places to stay (we'll stay from 1 to 2 weeks, probably) ... I am especially interested in the festival, while my wife and daughter are interested in the local architecture, history, arts and crafts. Also, if anyone has a specific schedule for the guitar festival (or at least the start/end dates!) that would be welcome.

Last year's dates for the Feria Nacional de Guitarra in Paracho were 4-12 August. There's absolutely no shortage of sites to visit in and around the Meseta Purepecha, and you've picked one of the best times of year to visit. The Feria Nacional de Cobre in Santa Clara de Cobre dovetails with that time frame.I'd suggest that you make your base station in Uruapan to maximize the opportunity for everyone in your family. My absolute favorite in Uruapan is the Mansion Cupatitzio, which borders the Parque Eduardo Ruiz. Another excellent hotel is the Hacienda Caracha.
