Film shot around SMA on HBO Sunday night

I'm stuck in a place with no HBO and am gritting my teeth. The HBO movie, "And starring Pancho Villa as himself," will be on HBO at 8:30 est Sunday night. It's the true story of how Pancho Villa turned to filmmaker D.H. Griffith for money for the revolution in return for letting his people do a film of the revolution. It's supposed to be very funny in parts as the Californians arrive with their stereotypes and want battle scenes reshot. Antonio Banderas stars and was the driving force in getting it made.

It was filmed in SMA and the countryside around here, and one Baptismal scene was filmed in the courtyard of the hotel complex on which my casa is located! I have friends who are extras in it (though they may be on the cutting room floor). I am absolutely livid that I cannot find anyone with HBO who can tape it for me. Nobody's got a working VCR and gets HBO and will be home Sunday night. (Hey, if anyone out there happens to tape it Sunday night, I will pay all expenses of tape and mailing it. I won't be back online until Monday afternoon, so this is probably hopeless too, but I am desperate!

Tune in Sunday night if you can, folks. I can't vouch if the movie will be any good though. Banderas has another movie filmed in San Miguel coming out in main movie theatres Sept. 12 or so--"Once upon a time in Mexico." I have heard it is a stinker, but I can't wait to see it anyway. I will still be stuck in Phoenix for doctor appointments until then so I can get to that one.

What hotel was the baptismal scene shot at?

The confirmation scene was in the courtyard of the Hotel Sautto (next to Belles Artes on Macias), but it was so crowded you couldn't see anything of the setting. The only recognizable scene from SMA was at the very end, the assassination scene in the car as it went down one of the main streets I walk almost every day on the way to El Tomate for fresh produce. (Or at least I did when I was there and hope to be back very soon.)

I did get to see the movie at the last minute--not great, but it did bring up some fascinating aspects about the 1910 Revolution, which was complex to say the least.

Can't wait until Friday to see the opening of "Once Upon a Time in Mexico" at the regular movies.

Thanks, Carol. There was another instant shot of the parrochia seen out the window of probably the Allende house or else the Canal building. I'll have to see the movie again. We happened to find the movie too at the last minute.

Was it on Codo where the assassination took place?

The scene in the movie was at Codo and the street that goes to Juarez Park, I don't know the name. I recognized the fountain, though!

Carol Schmidt, who will be back in San Miguel next week! Hurrah!

Hi Carol -

Got it on tape if you would like it! I was away in Ireland so I had my roommate tape it for me. Don't worry about postage or anything just let me know where/when to send it. With all the info you have given me I suspect this is the least I could do :)

I just saw Once Upon A Time in Mexico - and, yes, in my humble opinion it was a stinker. So much gore and blood and the story was hard to follow. Johnny Depp was really great in it and Antonio did his thing well. The scenery was wonderful, lots of shots of the Paroq, other churches, etc. also Guanajuato and other nearby spots.

I did get to see "And Starring..." already, but thank you for the offer to send your tape. Surprising that "Once Upon a Time" opened in first place and made so much money last week, though it's in fourth place for movies showing this week. Guess all that blood and gore sells!
