New glasses?

  | Private Reply
I was going to get new glasses before our trip but thought I might get a better deal in Ajiji. How long does it take to get them made?

The lady eye doctor that comes to LCS usually gets them in a week.

How long will it be before you arrive at Lakeside?

For Jerry...Is the lady at the Lake Chapala Society an Optomitrist or Opthamologist?

I have mine made at Costco in Guadalajara. For the lenses I use (trifocals), the cost is just under $100.00USD. Frames run the gamut from inexpensive to top-of-the-line designer with top-of-the-line price tags. They're ready in a week and I've never had any sort of problem.

Thanks everyone. I have several pair, but since I hate glasses I lose them on a several times a day basis. I never try to find them I just grab the next pair I run across. I don't really need another pair, more like checking out what's available. Hey Esperanza, I get mine at a Costco in Memphis. I wonder if they have all the same ones?

Kip:

Avoid optometrists in the Ajijic area like the plague wherever they may practice including gringo social clubs. Go to the Plaza Mexico area in Guadalajara. The Bubba knows of what he speaks from personal experience but will say no more.

Also, remember; if you presume that health practitioners of any kind allowed to offer their services on the grounds of Norteano social clubs are screened for their quality of care, you have only yourself to blame if their services do not meet your expectations.

You will have no recourse in the event of subsequent problems you may experience.

Do you sometimes get the impression that Bubba is not a member of the Lake Chapala Society. It certainly is not perfect but over two thousand (2,000) people are members and that means something.

I went to a qualified Eye Doc up North and got a prescription, but there wasn't time to get a new pair of glasses before I returned to Ajijic.

Later I checked out the various options lakeside and in Guad. I would have been happy at Costo, but chose the convenience of the the LCS. I went in to the visiting optometrist (she comes once per week from Guad), showed her the lens prescription and asked her to cut some new lenses for an extra pair of frames I had.

To her credit, she insisted on re-checking my eyes. Her new prescription was within a click (1/4 diopter) and a degree or three (spherical aberration) depending upon the eye. I got everything back one week later.

On my next visit to the states I had both the lenses and prescription checked by my optimolegist(spelling). She said that the new prescription was fine and then checked the quality of the lenses. They too were good.

Now don't ask me about insurance at the LCS.

Jerry:

I am a member of the LCS and fear that my earlier comment may have been misunderstood. My bad luck with a local eye doctor was experienced at one of the local clinics. That person tried to overcharge me to the tune of $10,000MP for cataract surgery.

The woman eye doctor who visits the LCS is very nice and I did not mean to imply otherwise.

I no longer have a bone to pick with the LCS. The board is doing very well in a thankless job in my opinion. I have had very cordial discussions with LCS board members regarding my earlier health insurance problems and appreciate their candor and impossible situation.

I simply meant that new people in town should exercise caution just as is true anytime one moves to a new area. I did not mean to reopen a past subject which has been beaten to death.

Thank you for your post johanson, I do appreciate that you post well thought out, concise, and factional information unlike another person who appears to constant rant, rave, and rail about a particular social organization and almost everything else in general Lakeside. You make it easy to know who to believe.

H. is correct as usual but I had no idea, based upon the accompanying picture of a latter day Jungle Jim in disquise, that the Unibomber had access to a computer in his jail cell.

And, Pete, you are both thoughtful and discreet. You need to speak your mind more candidly, however.

My pleasure, H. I have found that tequila bombs improve orange juice tremendously.

Pete's problem is that he is too civilized.

I'm afraid that Rolly will cut us off now since we have gone astray.

I have forgotten the original purpose of this thread if, indeed, there ever was one.

I may be due East and a little bit North of Victoria, BC and South of Vancouver BC, but I am also South of Bellingham, Washington with a zip code of 98274.

And it is true that I am so far North that I get clearer TV with an outdoor antenna from Vancouver than from Seattle.

And it is true that my small dish system is Canadian, and that is because it is the only dish system available giving me the Seattle network stations lakeside or in central america for that matter.

And the only reason I am nice, is because if I'm not, I will get reprimanded by everyone from Jennifer to Esperanza and the plumber who have my picture and know my address.

You are safe from the plumber because of the need for him to transit much of PatriotActAshcroftMessWithUs andLearntoSpeakSpanishinGuantanamoLand to find you.

Now, the following is important so that we will not seem to be running far afield from the original subject and find this forum locked:

Eyeglasses,no matter from where originated, are an important asset to those who otherwise cannot see as well as they would like to see if at all.

Bubba, I quite agree with you about the present LCS health insurance. It does not seem to be very effective. In the past before they "improved" it it was very good. Susan's hospital bills were taken care of in a fine manner. After 2 weeks in intensive care and a week in a private room all we had to pay was about 30 pesos and that was for a TV in her private room. What people have to know that the people who are officials at LCS do not claim to be experts at anything. They are all just trying to make things a little better for all of us and are USUALLY successful.

We also had excellent experience with the old LCS group health plan. Great care (and food) at Del Carmen Hospital and responsive service by the agent. Del Carmen is the best hospital we have experienced anywhere. Then. poof! The group health insurance was history with practically no warning and with surgery for me pending which I now must pay for out of pocket. That is what had me upset. But I now realize that was not the LCS board's fault. Just one of those things. (Hey, that would make a good song.)

Pete maybe you are a closet Canadian and just don't know it yet LOL

It must be confusing as hell to be north of Victoria yet South of Vancouver.

And BTW, do you know where the fish and chip place is in Steveson (sp).

I am informed by a certain family member that "I Must" go there.

Thanks to Arbon, I also found out that I will NOT be on the Pacific Ocean but 100 miles from it and the water temps at the new digs will be 70 degrees in August. Maybe the coast has possibilities !!
