Hotels/internet access in Ajijic?

Are there hotels in Ajijic that have internet access or are in the range of the wireless system? We are trying to plan a trip and would need to be able to work a little while there. I would prefer to stay close to el centro if possible. I would, of course, be glad to pay for an account for a month while we are there if I can make the wireless thing work. Or dialup might get us by if the hotel didn't have a problem with us tying up the line for extended periods. (We would need to be online for an hour or two at a time)

I'd be glad to hear any options that I haven't considered.

I hope someone else has a better solution. Perhaps there is a hotel with network setup where you could either set up via Wi Fi or ethernet, but I don't know of any.

THe wireless available in Ajijic is fixed Wi Fi from www.laguna.com.mx. But unlike Starbucks, you will need an external antenna connected to your 802.11b card. That antenna needs to be of sufficient gain and line of site of one of Lagunanet's transceiver antennas (access points) located from 3 miles East of Ajijic to 9 miles south of Ajijic.

That may not be practical. Getting a short term prodigy internet account would also prove very challenging, maybe someone reading this will know of a way to do it.

But here is what you could do, if there is no better solution. When you arrive in town, immediately go to the CIA and check your email. Oh that stands for Cafe Internet Ajijic. Everyone in town knows where it is (Across the street from the Ajijic Telmex Office). At the same time one of you could go upstairs and talk to the folks at lagunanet (The local ISP). They could provide you an account for one month for $20 and you could dial in from your hotel room to their local dial up #. It's only 33.6 Kb/sec but they have a good backbone to the states.

I think the Prodigy solution is the way to go in this case. tfyoung doesn't indicate where he is from but assuming its the USA, he/she could subscribe to Prodigy up there (avoiding the need for a local Mexican phone line ownership). I think it is now named SBC Yahoo. After the Mexican vacation, the account can be terminated in the US. This of course assumes that only dialup acccess is needed rather than broadband.

That might not be a bad plan. We would like to visit some other towns, and something like Prodigy might be the only way to move around and still have access.

Any experience on how hotels react to a guest tying up a phone line for hours at a time? I have traveled extensively in Mexico, but its been awhile. Most of the hotels I stayed in didn't have phones in the rooms. By now, they may not even care or notice that a guest is wearing out the line.

Casa Blanca, the hotel I like so much I am staying for one month also has WiFi for those with notebooks or laptops. Just like starbucks in the US.

I made a mistake:

Casa Blanca at this time does not have WiFi access.

You can, however, bring your laptop and be provided with a place to plug it in with fast internet cable service

Casa Blanca Hotel has 4 PC machines, free for guests, and they have always been available so far.

Located right across the street from the Lake Chapala Society, walking distance to everything.

one can bring a laptop and connect via cable.

It is a very pleasant, peaceful, place.

Sara, can you plug in from your room at Casa Blanca? Our work would require us to be online for extended periods of time and it might not be practical in a traffic area. Also, do they mind the guests using dialup from their rooms? I can't find much information from them online. Might need to give them a call. The only rate I saw was $450 per month. What is the daily rate for the double rooms?

I phoned the owner. He told me he had ADSL and that he provided a cable for a lady guest to plug into. He didn't know what Ethernet was but said he had ADSL, so I presume it was Cat5 or some type of Ethernet cable. I didn't think to ask whether this connection was offered in the rooms or not. I asked him if he had wireless and he said he was interested in it but that he did not have it yet.

So this is different from what you were told Sara. The guy I talked to seemed real friendly and spoke pretty good English. So correct me if I misunderstood him

they don't have a cable in the rooms,but the computer room is quit and the trafic is low,if you want privacy,i think it could be arrenged.
