Green Building Workshop/Seminar?

Can't Post | Private Reply
Greetings and Saludos -

My nam is Ron Mader, and I am a writer and environmentalist. I have never posted in this conference before and for good reason, I know very little about construction in Mexico.

Nevertheless, friends and I are thinking about hosting a workshop or seminar on green building -- using natural materials and focusing on renewable energy sources.

This would follow-up a virtual dialogue begun in the Green Building and the Tourism Industry conference -- http://www.planeta.com/...l/trade/gbtconf.html and the natural world event could take place as early as March 2004.

Question -- who might be interested? I'm not sure if we are discussing the creation of a 12-person event or a seminar/workshop that could draw 100-200 people. Feedback is welcome via the forum or my private email

Have you held Green Building Seminar yet? If not, when? My husband and I will be in the Chapala area the middle of October and would love to attend one of your seminars. We are not builders but feel it's our duty, as consumers, to look into this. We plan to retire in Mexico and want to investigate the ins and outs.

thank you

No, we have not conducted the seminar in Mexico. But plans are to devise something for early 2004. Keep an eye on the Planeta website for details

We would be interested, but we woudl be in the Yucatan Pen. area. I am interested in composting toilets, and what is available in Mexico for purchase. Have you connected with the environmentalists (Kate Riley or Dinah Drago, etc.) in Akumal? They are doing great work on the eastern coast. (www.ceakumal.org)

The workshop we will host will take place in Oaxaca in late 2004. We will have cooperation and support from our friends at Sustainable Sources -- http://www.greenbuilder.com

There is great work taking place around the country, and it's good to know who is doing what and where.

In the field of composting toilets ... the sad truth is that many of these toilets have been built by people who don't understand what they are doing. This has created a negative image in many people's minds, though the concept is valid!

As a reference, I would refer you to Planeta's guide to ecological bathrooms -- http://www.planeta.com/...avel/tour/banos.html -- one of my favorite features. Enjoy!

Update -- Planeta website will host an April 2004 online conference on Ecolodges with participation from Mexican architect Hector Ceballos Lascurain. This will be followed by a November 2004 meeting (to be confirmed) in Oaxaca that will review ecolodge development and general green building techniques.

For details, keep an eye on Planeta's events calendar --

I recommend that you definitely get in touch with the artist Francisco Toledo and his core of followers here in Oaxaca for your conference. He is a strong advocate of better living solutions and has his hand in many things.

I'm glad somebody is talking toilets, any outhouse is always a relief for me to encounter in Mexico - a decent outhouse would be a delight. Unhandy toilets and screwy plumbing work make outhouses look attractive. Why bother to pay so much to build these things and have them serve so poorly? Mexico is so physically well situated for alternate solutions.
