Air Filters in DF - What's the deal?

Can't Post | Private Reply
Hello -

We are currently remodeling an apartment in DF and would like to install some type of air filter in our home. We can't afford a big central type of system, so I was thinking of buying individual units for each room.

I have looked in tons of stores all around DF and the suburbs and have yet to find any type of air filter. What the hell?? When I moved down here I thought I would have a wide selection of filters to choose from, (this being one of the most polluted cities and all), but the only kinds I can find are wimpy ones attached to air conditioners. Yuck.

So, what do people do down here? My Mexican boyfriend, who has lived here all his life, thinks this is a bit ridiculous, but I am from Oregon and do like to breathe sometimes. Any suggestions? I am already going to do the plant thing for sure.

Thanks!

Try the street Republica El Salvador in the Centro. The last time I was there, I recall seeing air filters. I have one that I got in Mexico City somewhere (at Sears? Palacio de Hierro?)

The air has improved dramatically over the past 15 years. When I first came here more than a decade ago, it was common to have ozone levels of 250 or so on the scale. Now they rarely seem to get above 150 (100 being unacceptible). And before that, in the days before lead-free gasoline, you had lead -- not mere ozone -- as a problem.

It's still not great, but it's a far cry from what it was.

Juliet,

I had some Friedrich's shipped down here from the States for myself, my boss and his family. You should see if they have a distributor down here, as they make the best according to Consumer Reports.

Tell your boyfriend I have to clean it every month, and I am a nonsmoker. It takes 5 minutes in the shower to clean out all the gunk.

Try http://www.romaq.com.mx/indexi.html they are close to the DF.

HEPA is much better than electrostatic. A central unit would require that the circulation fan be running all the time. I use a HEPA just in my bedroom.
