Star Choice Satellite?

Can't Post | Private Reply
Hi there,

I read your post on the other forum and would love some information about Star Choice TV. We have sooooo had it with MegaRed Cable and Direct TV Mexico, however I miss having some English channels - news especially, but season finales are right up there too...A sane alternative to these two I mentioned is most welcome.

Thanks a million.

The CRTC (canadian FCC) says it's illegal pay for and watch Canadian TV outside of Canada. But the laws only apply while you are in Canada. So technically you are breaking no Canadian laws when paying for and watching Star Choice outside of Canada. That shouldn't make sense. For a detailed discussion thereon, I would recommend the reader link to www.global-cm.net/CAN/canadiansolution.html and further link to the legal section.

That said the Star Choice coverage footprint can be seen by linking to www.telesat.com.br/F1_NA_Ku.htm As you will see it covers all of Mexico and much of Central America

If you are from Canada, and have a Canadian address, it is very simple to subscribe to Star Choice. In Ajijic you either pay about $500 US for a Star Choice system or less than $100 Canadian should you buy the system in Canada. Of course you have to tell everyone that you are buying the system for Canada, or maybe for your mobile home, that goes everywhere but is normally in Canada.

If you are not from Canada there are ways through a "brokerage house" to subscribe for an extra fee.

$500 US may seem high when you see ads in Canada for less than $100 US. Don't fault the satellite dealer. the price is fair. He has to pay shipping and import duty plus obtain a slightly larger dish and install the system. And he isn't artificially discounting the real sales price by forcing you to sign up for programming for perhaps a year.

There is a chance the dish that comes with the system for Canada will work for you in Mazatlan.

I brought the satellite receiver and an LNBF with me and only had to buy a dish and have it installed, so my costs were much less. One usually pays less than $100 US for the dish and perhaps $50 for an install. (What's the LNBF? That's the electronics at the focal point of the dish that the coax cable connects to)

If you happen to be from the Island (Vancouver Island for you not in the know) I would recommend you get your equipment from my Sat dealer Jim Foreman, his email address is info@ultravisionsatellite.com He lives in Duncan.

To learn more about Star Choice go to www.starchoice.com and start reading.

Now, you have got a lot of reading to do. Let's hope that the satellite dealers in Mazatlan already know about this option, but there is a chance they don't.

The easiest thing for you to do is find a dealer in Mazatlan who knows about Star Choice, and have him tell you what to bring with you from Canada, and let him do the rest.

Good luck
