Working Illegally in Mexico- Oaxaca, Guaymas, Acapulco

Can't Post |
I will be spending some time in Oaxaca, Guaymas y Acapulco. I'm 26, a poor, recent college graduate, and I will be on an FMT because I don't have a company lined up other than my unpaid internship. How realistic is it to hope to earn some spare pesos along the way? I'm willing to do almost any odd jobs aside from sanitation or criminal activity and I don't expect to make much money at all. Does anyone have any ideas? Is it as easy as it is in the U.S. to work illegally? Is asking the other gringos if they have any work a valid option?

I'm not recommending doing it illegally, but you can possibly/probably get a job teaching English. Check all the language schools. They won't pay much, but better than nada

A lot of people work illegally but whether it's worth it or not depends on what you have to lose. If you get busted you may be deported or in cases I've seen, you'll have to pay a fine and get the proper paperwork. Mexican officials seem to be very amiable and willing to work it out rather than going through the hassle of deportation. I'm not talking about bribery either. However, working for a living in Mexico and being paid Mexican wages, under the table, is not going to be an easy way to survive. Some can tolerate the poverty and function well. Others, in the end, find the lack of comfort to be unworkable and return to the land of plenty. It'll all depend on what reality you're comfortable with and your vision of the future. Good luck.
