Posting and real people

Hi,

As my time grows closer to moving to Mexico (P.V. I'm thinking for now), I am wondering if this is how expats etc., communicate down there. Are their get- togethers to see people for real at a club/ restaurant, or on the beach? Do you have common and regular activities that I could become a part of?....heading down there as a single, could start out a little lonely I think until I was able to establish a base of new friends. Just wondering the easiest way to do that....if anyone has input I would be greatful....thanks.

Also planning to head down on a flight in August to book an apartment for Sept when I move. I have cruised the boards quite a bit trying to gleam whatever info on prices and locations I could, but it seems a lot of those are not updated too regularily...there must be some places vacant in P.V., and I guess that waiting till I got there would be the best thing to do. For a week trip, has anyone got any suggestions?..or just rent a room in one of the beach hotels on the internet.

I suppose to find an apartment, it seems the best thing to do I have heard is wait till I get there as there are posting places in certain stores in the city....and then walk or hop the bus and start looking.

Is this what most of you full-timers did?....interested how you got to find your 'perfect' place at the 'right' price?

Thanks guys/girls

Check out the board below. Nice people, great participation, and they are always getting together for some reason or other. I imagine they can point you in the right direction for housing.

Pat is right--the PV board is where you will more likely find the specific info you need. Just fyi, I just rented my very nice one-bedroom condo in Los Muertos for 16 months at just under US$700 per month, plus utilities. The condo is NOT on the beach, and this is considered (so the realtors told me) a fairly low price--but I was happy with the 16-month term.

In PV you can mix or not, as you choose. Check out the rental ads in the PV Mirror online. One week may not be enough time to find what you want, so check the bulletin boards, but also go to at least one realtor.

Finding the perfect place

Everyone, in every part of Mexico, has his or her own story about finding the right place. For me, living in Morelia was the culmination of traveling through most of the Republic, over about 20 years. As time went on, my vacation time became concentrated in three areas: D.F., Cuernavaca, and Morelia. The Camino Real in D.F., Las Mananitas in Cuernavaca, and the Villa Montana in Morelia. Finally, I found Morelia become the focal point of my vacations.

During these vacations, I looked casually at two houses. One was in Vista Bella, and one was in the Club Campestre. While both were good deals, neither was exactly my style.

One Christmas, I saw a "for sale" banner in front of an old place with only a gate visible from the street. I found myself talking to a lawyer who mentioned that he was building a new house in the neighborhood, and lo and behold, it turned out that he was the selling the place with the "for sale" sign. After looking at a couple of other properties, I ended up buying the first place I'd seen. A few months later, I returned, asked an architect to draw up some plans and build a casita on the place. And it's been history ever since.

I didn't rent first. I didn't get around to completely, permanently moving down until about eight years later. But I haven't regretted the decision one single bit.

Now, there are some who'll spend years researching the perfect place. Some of them may even spend entire lifetimes doing so. There are some who'll find fault with Paradise, and there are those who are satisfied with the serendipity of their first choice.
