Practicing Indirect Object Pronouns

1. Me interesa su viaje a méxico. Your trip to Mexico interests me.

2. Me faltan mis amigos en españa. I miss my friends in Spain.

3. Me gustan los tacos en esto restaurante. I like the tacos in this restaurant.

4. A mi esposa le encantan los enchiladas con queso. My wife loves enchiladas with cheese.

5. A mi esposa le interesa la película se llama "Bruce Almighty". Quisiera ver este.

My wife is interested in the movie called "Bruce Almighty". She would like to see it.

6. Me importa aprendar el español. It is important to me to learn Spanish.

7. Me aburren los reuniones a mi trabajo. I am bored by meetings at my work.

8. Parecer (to seem)... Me parece tu está enfermo.

It seems to me you are sick.

9. Me molesta usar los trajes y corbatos. I hate wearing suits and ties.

10. Mi esposa y yo nos disgusta el aborto.

México, con mayúscula.

Las enchiladas.

1. Me interesa su viaje a méxico.
México, con mayúscula.

The capitalization rules are a little bit different in Spanish than in English. But not for country or city names I take it. I was confused (still am a bit) but your correction at least clarifies that country names are capitalized. I think there are some differences. Maybe someone could go over the differences if they are not too complicated.

2. Me faltan mis amigos en españa.
Extraño a mis amigos en España. ("I am a stranger to my friends in España" or something like this) Is my construction using Indirect Object pronoun with the verb faltar just completely weird (not said at all)? What semantic territory does "faltar" cover? Does it mean more like "need" or "lack for something" than "miss"? As in miss friends. Possibly a few examples of usage of faltar with Indirect Object pronouns would help us beginners get a feel for this verb.

3. Me gustan los tacos en esto restaurante.
Me gustan los tacos en este restaurante (o: de este restaurante).
In my dictionary I see ésta, éste, and esto and they all mean "this" I also see esta, este without the accent mark meaning "this". I'm sure there is a rule here somewhere. :-/ And one of these days I'll learn it.

4. A mi esposa le encantan los enchiladas con queso.
Las enchiladas. Darn, that was a stupid mistake. I know better! "a" and "as" are feminine. Geez... I guess when my attention is drawn to le, se, nos I got distracted. :-)

5. A mi esposa le interesa la película se llama "Bruce Almighty". Quisiera ver este.
A mi esposa le interesa la película Bruce Almighty y quisiera verla. This "verla" must be a form of the "ver" verb that we have not learned yet. I understand there are a lot more to come with verbos españoles. I have only learned "present tense" and some irregulars so far. And not very well, I might add!! Which is obvious from this homework. Ha ha... And, I am assuming that "Spanish" in "Spanish verbs" is not capitalized in español. Correct?

éste, ésta (with an accent) mean "this" as a pronoun, as in Éste es mi amigo.

este, esta (without the accent) mean "this" as an adjective, as in Este hombre es mi amigo.

Esto is used for "this" as a neuter pronoun when the antecedent is not known (masculine or feminine).

Not to worry: not a form of the verb, but the infinitive with the object pronoun tacked on.

She would like (quisiera) to see it (verla).

Extranar: to miss someone

Faltar: to need or lack something

Thanks for that clarification. I think I saw a form like that before in one of my asssignments posted previously someone corrected my "gustar ellos" (to like them" to "gustarlos". I didn't know what that form was then (last week). Now another one appears "verla". "The old attach a pronoun to an infinitive trick, hey. Pretty clever!" as Agent Smart would say...

Hola Guillermo,

Sí, los países son escritos con mayuscula. Las cosas derivadas no. En inglés, sí. español-Spaniard, or español-Spanish/ inglés-English or Englishman/ inglesa-Englishwoman, etc.

"Me faltan mis amigos de Espána" no es cierto porque el verbo faltar significa-to be missing in the sense of to lack. El verbo extrañar-significa to be missing in the sense of I wish you were here. De verdad, la frase te extráno significa-I miss you. El sujeto y la adjetiva extraño/a indica una persona o cosa no conocida. Es diferente de extranjero que usualmente indica un grado de extrañez más lejos---como un foreigner perhaps. Me falta dinero para pagar la luz. ¿Ver la diferencia? Me faltan mis amigos de España could actually be read as my friends in Spain have let me down.

Let me make a comment here. You seem to be lacking a good dictionary. The best I have found after much searching is The Oxford Spanish Dictionary(Sp-Eng/Eng-Sp) with some 275,000 words and over 450,000 translations. To this if you are serious you need a Spanish only dictionary, and the pequeño LaRousse is a good compromise. If you can find one, a good Mexican dictionary is also needed, but I haven't found one although Dictionario Anaya de la lengua is often helpful. Make a search for the Real Acamedia on Google and connect to there via the internet when you are really stumped, but it won't help too much with Mexican modismos. For pocket dictionaries I have found the University of Chicago book to be portable and useful for limited encounters.

6. El verbo to learn es aprender con er no con ar. Fijate que la palabra aprehender que suena la misma significa: apprehend or take into custody. Se determina significación por el contexto.

7. de mi trabajo, no a mi trabajo.

8. Me pareces infermo/a. O Tú me pareces infermo/a. O se me parece que tú estás infermo/a.(The catastrophic construction or passive).

9. Me molestan los trajes y las corbatas.

10. Nos disgusta el aborto a mí y a mi esposa.

Extrañar: to miss someone

Hacer falta: to miss someone

Perder: to miss (the bus, for example)

Extraño a mis amigos de España=I miss my friends from Spain.

Me hacen falta mis amigos de España=I miss my friends from Spain. This construction actually includes the indirect object, which seems to be the point of your exercises.

Perdí el camión para Chapala=I missed the bus for Chapala.

Jerezano,

Usa la palabra "infermo". Do you mean "enfermo"? Or is this a different word, "infermo"? I learned "enfermo" to mean "ill or sick" which seems to fit the meaning of your example but maybe there is a difference in spelling that I am not recognizing.

Thanks for your corrections to my sentences. ¡Dios Mio! Español es muy complicado. But fun to learn anyway... Thanks for your assistance.

By the way, my 9 week class ended last night. Since I will be coming to Mexcio in a couple of weeks, I did not enroll for the continuation. They call it "Intermediate" which in my mind is a serious misnomer. I am not even a "beginner" yet. I feel I only "scratched the surface" of Español. I think they should call the classes "Beginning 1, Beginning 2, Beginning 3" for at least a year of study before they call a class "Intermediate". I am almost afraid to enroll for an "Intermeidate" class given my current level of confusion. But anyway... Maybe a few weeks in Mexico will help me "tune up my ear" and "loosen my tongue" for at least some "survival" Spanish. But to my point, I guess I won't be posting any more "homework assignments" here for awhile but I will continue to study on my own using my computer-based self study program and so, if I have more questions or post my work, I hope all of you won't mind too much.
