Freedom Paradise Resort (for the big tourist)

Resort Caters To Big Tourists

TANKAH, Mexico -- In a world enthralled by thin, perhaps no place is more slanted toward the slender or more daunting for the double-chinned than the beach.

However, the beach is being made safe for the amply built with the opening of what claims to be the world's first "size-friendly, all inclusive beach resort." At the Freedom Paradise resort south of Cancun, the motto is: "Live Large, Live Free!"

The resort, which formally opens June 15, targets people afraid to go out on the sand with a few extra pounds, or a few extra dozens of pounds. No more enduring cruel jokes on the beach, or wisecracks from the staff. [more]

I was reading that the other day in the local paper. Lots of smaller hotels looking for their own person niche market. Lots of travel patterns have changed since 9/11 and creativity in attraction is even more important nowadays. Their are a couple of swinger hotels in the area--one has been here a long time and the other is new and affiliated to RCI, the biggest timeshare exchange company--that also now includes a gay/lesbian oriented resort in its directory of 3,000 resorts. The first nudist flight in May brought more international than local attencion but I am sure it will grow. So not all "boutique hotels" are geared towards beauty enhancement, weight loss, extreme luxury and service or mountain biking and hiking tours.

Every time I go to the States I am amazed at the size of the people there--"huge" and "big" are words that come to mind and then I read how despite all of the diet-centered, health consciousness of a youth-obsessed society, about 60% of the population is overweight and a large percentage of those are classified as obese. And Mexico has caught up with those percentages--believe it or not!! The problem is not wealth or poverty or haves or have nots--it has to do with what we DO with what we have and have not. Eating the wrong things and not getting enough excercise are not limited to the "poor" and/or "less educated."

Not sure how I got so far off track with this post--must have something to do with the potgut I am trying to get rid of. Thanks for listening!

Skinnies of the world: UNITE!

Once again, rampant discrimination against thinner people is being practised. Not only do we have to pay the same for air tickets as more corpulent individuals (we should be entitled to a correspondingly higher baggage allowance!), but we must also suffer the indignity in any bookstore of having to wade through shelves and shelves of "How to lose weight" books with little or no chance of ever locating that elusive title, "How to gain weight". Add to that the fact that many street corners lack a McDonalds - how are we expected to re-stock our bodies with sufficient calories to reach the next corner (and next McDonalds)?. Now, we're being excluded from a hotel???

Say after me: "We, the stick people of the world, do hereby commit ourselves to ending discrimination against "skinnies", whether by airlines, bookstores or hotels, or anyone else, and we WILL get full and proper representation in all public forums... (even if we're not as easy to see as certain other participants)"...

I am afraid you are right, Tony--even though tongue-in-cheek at the moment. Airlines recently announced that their "per person average weight allotment" has just gone up by 10 pounds--from 85 to 95 pounds per seat. Since a plane can only hold so much weight--per the one that nose-dived about a month ago--the only thing left to do is to lower the luggage allowance--for thin and non-thin alike. Some airlines are also offering "wider" seating with more leg room and while comfort is a favorite of all of us and we are glad the "cattle car" may be on its way out, the idea of a cattle car for elephants replacing it is not much more convincing. This is reminding me of "smokers´rights" and smoking areas movements earlier on. And we know how that ended. And however ludicrous the Anti-Macdonald´s lawsuits seem to us, "the times they are a changing" and whether we like it or not, the government will be butting in to our dietary intake before long. For our own good of course.

Those of us with a constant battle of the bulge and a constant struggle not to kill ourselves with overdoses of cochinita pibil and chocolate cake are not in favor of prejudices against us but "catering" to my oversize by creating XXXXXXL t-shirts does nothing but enable me even more to ingest huge doses of delicious vitamin "T" (tacos, tamales, tostadas, tortillas,tortas,etc.). I would love to unite with your movement--just give me another 20 kilos---or rather with 20 kilos LESS--I will join you in protesting against fat favoritism. What is it we do as a group of skinnies anyway? Will there be bbq´s? Buffet´s? I need some incentive here--help me out!
