Shown below is a post I made on another forum. The folks there were asking and commenting about the two internet service providers available. There were some rather strong moments, both pro and con about Lagunanet and prodigy, the two most popular ISPs lakeside.
I pointed out that if the reader didn't like either that he could connect to the internet via two way satellite, and mentioned that one of the internet ISPs was direcway but that the reader had better know how to install the system himself and then I further post this, which I hope you will find interesting
It's amazing. You either love or hate your ISP be it Prodigy or Lagunanet. Sadly many of you who are very sure that one or the other is bad or good are basing your decision on limited incomplete information.
Now before you Spam me, that's not your fault. Based upon the info you have, I probably would come up with the same conclusion. I write technical articles for a Guad newspaper. In order to stay sharp I volunteered at both prodigy and lagunanet to answer tech questions several hours per day. Only lagunanet has a local office so I volunteer there. Because of that I have access to their data base.
I see how many people are hooked up, at any one time. I see when only a few or most of the ISPs modems are being used. And very occasionally when all seem to be used. That's when you get a busy signal. I look at the statistics. I see how some users regularly stay on line 3 to 4 hours at a time, I see how others never (can or do) stay on line more than 10 or 15 minutes at a time..
Some of those who can't stay hooked up are always phoning up and complaining. When I question them about their modem or their telephone lines, some of them get mad at me, thinking I am trying to blame them for something they know is Lagunabet's fault. And when I suggest that just maybe, there are things they can do at their end to make their connection better, some of them get down right ornery
All I can tell them is that I have two telephone lines at home, one newer and one older, and that I have three computers each with telephone modems. One telephone line works much better than the other and my US robotics modem works much better than the standard modem supplied by my HP or Compaq
With my best modem and the best line I can stay on for hours. But with my newest computer, I have to redial often and can not stay on line more than 10 to 20 minutes at a time. And yes, the more persons using the phone system, (the phone system not lagunanet or prodigy) the harder it seems to be to stay on line with lagunanet even when lagunanet isn't busy
SO WHAT I AM SAYING IS, yes each ISP has it's shortcomings, but usually there is much YOU can do to make your connection MUCH BETTER. In fact that seems to be the situation about 90% of the time. Often simply replacing your modem makes a difference.
Hey I went wireless and never have to re-dial. I only use my telephone modems about once per month to confirm that everything is working.
