Ham Radio

Can't Post | Private Reply
I'm sorry to be such a pest with my 1001 questions...can you tell that I'm really excited about this? :>

Anyway...hubby is big into ham radio and wanted me to ask if anyone one on this site can give him some info. He'd like to bring his radio equipment w/him (I know, there will be some headaches involved in serial numbers, registering it,etc); is there a reciprocal agreement for his US license, etc, or is this not possible. As he puts it, he can live without it, but it would be nice if he could continue.

Thanks so much for all of your help!

Cheri

My hubby who has always been big into ham radio says that the one thing to watch out for is gated communities, condos, etc, where there is a set of rules about Everything - what antennas you can or can't have and everything else that you can or can't do. We had a chance at buying a beautiful house in a gated community near us, gorgeous view, great price - No Thank You! Too many rules and regulations. If your husband is also into airplanes, tell him that my husband flew with the RAF and that we're both pilots.

Mexico does have a reciprocal agreement with the US, but there are different kinds of reciprocal agreements. Some countries allow a foreign operator to go on the air with just a simple call sign appendage. Mexico is not one of those countries. One has to apply for an operating permit and pay the associated fee, its about 80 dollars for 6 months. The time period of six months is tied to the FMT visa. Here are some details of how it all works :

Alex: Thanks so much...this is exactly what we were looking to find. Dave has been doing this for so long that I don't think he'd know what to do with himself if he couldn't sit in front of his radio. It's worth the time, effort and expense. As for me, give me a book or water and I'm a happy camper.

Peggy: Dave was in the Royal Corps of Signals. We really appreciate the info about gated communities because that's important to know. It would be hard to find a place that we really like and then find out that we've escaped the rat race only to find a new trap!

Again, thanks to you both!

There must be 20 2 meter hand held or base stations lakeside. The two most popular frequencies are 146.40 and 146.49. There is also a ham radio club that meets at the the Lake Chapala Society each Friday at 10 AM

How about a book and a glass of wine?
Okay, to get serious (although Alex has done his usual great job of answering the real questions), - here in Ajijic, there is a very active ham radio club at the Lake Chapala Society. It's not only a way of meeting new people and making like-minded friends, but you get your technical questions answered. Among the many other clubs and classes there are the computer club and the digital camera group. There's also the 30,000 volume English language library plus many donated paperbacks for sale, and within a few blocks there are several second-hand stores also selling books of all kinds.

Uh-oh! Now you've made me a very happy girl! :>

This is so exciting...we're about 99.9% set on the idea of a southern retirement (after making sure that we're not making a rush decision, etc, etc) and it's so much fun to know that we have such a variety of spots to choose. The hardest part right now is just deciding on where to start off. Since it appears that Dave can "do" his ham radio thing anywhere (with the appropriate masses of paperwork and $$), we're wide open to ideas.

Again,, thanks all for the help!

I am not making any suggestions here, but because there is an annual charge of over $70 to renew your reciprocal agreement paperwork each year in Jalisco, more than half of the ham members don't bother with the process.
