Current Lake Issues

My wife and I are considering retirement in the Lake Chapala area in a few years. We are thinking about touring the area and if we are still of a mind to retire there, we might go forward with purchasing a home in the near future. My concern is that I have read a lot about the "dying" of the Lake, etc. What is the current situation there? Thank you,

Signed...Rookie at this, but wish I was there now!

The lake truly is in danger of dying and it is hard to predict how it will fare as so much of its fate will be determined by action (or lack of action) of Mexican government. There are water agreement accords in place for users of water supplies in Rio Lerma Lake Chapala but they are not enforced by govt. Hence Lake Chapala is at a dangerously low level, far below what the govt itself deemed critical. Plans for a new dam to supply water for Guadalajara will not help as it will divert water from a river that supplied Chapala. There are plans to modernize some of the irrigation equipment used by agricultorists along the Lerma and that could help. Rains help restore the lake each year, but do not provide enough water to overcome the the lack of input from the Lerma, nor the output to Guadalajara and other places.

I would encourage all those interested in the lake and its future to join Amigos del Lago, and please log on to the web site amigosdelago.org for more information. Anyone who lives in Mexico (or might) should be concerned about the future of Lake Chapala because of its potential loss could have catastophic consequences for climate and health of region and its inhabitants.
