Gracias Señor Quevedo,

Your assistance is appreciated. I see the proper way to say my father is no longer living and the proper phrase for New York City.

Thanks,

Bill

Hola Memo...generally speaking, and IMHO only, when we speak of where someone is from (Tengo una hermana de Key West, Florida) we mean that that person is a native of that place. When we speak of where someone lives at the present, we say, Tengo una hermana en Key West, Florida, y un hermano en Nueva York. Yo también estoy en Neuva York. Tenemos una hermana en Miami.

Unless, of course, the members of your family really were born in all those places.

A quién le toca ya?

Esperanza,

Thanks for your suggestions. My family members were born in all those different places but live now in some different places. So I believe (until someone corrects me) that I have used "de" and "en" correctly in the sentences. But your suggestion made me think that I did make errors in "ser" and "estoy" verbs. I am still not certain but I will offer these corrections to my own sentences:

Escribo antes: Él es matrimonio.

Pero ahora: Él está matrimonio. (I believe being married is not considered a permanent state in Spanish).

Escribo antes: Ellos tienen un hijo y Carmen es embarazada por nuestro segundo nieto.

Pero ahora: Ellos tienen un hijo y Carmen está embarazada por nuestro segundo nieto. (Being pregnant is surely not a permanent state.)

If it may be helpful to other learners, our teacher gave us these "acroynyms" to help differentiate "Ser" and "Estoy"

Ser is used for:

T = Time

O = Origin (place of birth)

P = Profession

T = To express predicate noun (Like "He is my uncle").

O = Ownership

P = Permanent characteristic

Estoy is used for:

H = Health

E = Emotions

A = Attitude

L = Location

T = Temporary condition

H = Happening now

Further corrections are welcome. I learn something by my errors.

Salud,

Guillermo

Él es matrimonio. Él está matrimonio.
Ellos tienen un hijo y Carmen está embarazada por nuestro segundo nieto.

Él es casado, o
Él está casado. Ambas expresiones son correctas.

Ellos tienen un hijo y Carmen está embarazada de nuestro segundo nieto, o
Carmen espera a nuestro segundo nieto.

Saludos cordiales,

Quevedo

Él es casado o Él está casado. (Both expressions are correct).

Gracias Quevedo.

Both are correct depending on one's view of life, huh? :-)

¿Cuál es la diferencia en significar "espera o embarazada"?

They seem to take different constructions for their proper use.

Gracias otra vez,

Guillermo

Espera is the verb 'she awaits' or 'she is expecting' (from the infinitive esperar, to wait). Está embarazada means 'she is pregnant' (from the infinitive estar embarazada, 'to be pregnant'). You can also say 'está encinta', which also means 'she is pregnant'~but you don't hear it much.

Gracias Esperanza... Now I see what espera means... I knew that too... "to wait or hope" but I didn't make the connection between that idea and "pregnant" but we say the same idea in English. We say "she is expecting"...

Thanks for telling me the meaning of those words.

Excuse me for butting in.

Embarazada is the participle.The infinitive would be embarazar.

Hola Memo,

Concordancia es un problema grande en español. Tal vez fueron errores tipográficos pero....

todos partes debe ser todas partes (partes f)

un hermana debe ser una hermana (hermana f)

Modismos (idioms) es otro problema grande.

Mi nuera "se llama" Carmen. My daughter-in-law "calls herself" Carmen. Me llamo a mí Jerezano. Tú te llamas Memo.

Usted está prgresando muy bien. Adios. Jerezano

Jerezano,

Muchas Gracias por su ayuda.

Si, there are many things to think about when writing Spanish. As a beginner, when I am concentrating on one part like for example "ser" vs. "estar" verbs, then I tend to forget another part, like agreement "un" vs. "una". I guess it is because these things are not "second nature" to me yet. But with more practice I am sure at least some of these errors will resolve themselves.

Thanks for your assistance and corrections.
