Internet Service

Can't Post |
I just got to Ajijic a couple of days ago, and signed up at Laguna for a dialup connection. We are only going to be here for a few months, so I didn't want to pay the mega installation charge for the wireless when I won't be here permanently. Today, this dialup connection has been down more than it has been up. Just wondering if anyone can offer me insight as to whether this is "common" for their dialup service (disconnecting in the middle of chatting,,, can't find server, etc.). Is the wireless service more reliable? I may have to bite it and pay the megabucks for wireless, but I don't want to if it is just as unstable. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hola!

First - check the technical mexico forum for more detailes on what I am about to suggest.

The biggest problem with dial-up here - no matter who the provider is. - is the connection between the pole and your house AND between the house and your computer.

Those two bits of wiring can produce much line noise which results in disconnects.
The older the wiring, the greater the potential.
The hotter the temperature the greater the potential
The more rainy it is (late June through September) the greater the potential.

Talk to Rod or Peter in the AM, but also - find out how old the wiring is - more than 5 years = potential problems. The disintegration of wires and connections here is far more rapid than NoB.

In addition to disconnects due to wiring, the time of day may make it difficult to get connected. Quite often, when I try to get a connection between 9am and 11am I get the standard rejection notice. Mid-day between 2pm and 4pm also seems to be difficult. Anyone else having connectivity problems during these hours?

If you were to have posted in Tech Mexico I would have checked sooner and responded. Lagunanet had a backbone problem. It was easy to get to them and check web pages hosted by them. But the connection to the internet was down.

I reported to laguna that they were down at about 10:40 They were running again perhaps 15 minutes later. They were down again in the early afternoon twice for short periods. I do not know why they were down. It may well have been the backbone provider, the company that connects them to the internet.

I only know that they have a new Dell Server, that has greatly increased their connection speeds. No system is perfect. But lagunanet is usually pretty darn good.

This info is provided by a biased friend of Lagunanet

Thanks everyone for your info on the dialup. Does anyone have comments on the wireless connection,,, is it more reliable? And how does rain/weather affect it? Thanks again.

First wireless 802.11b is at a frequency, 2.4 GH, that is not highly effected by rain.

second if your antenna can see one of the wireless antennas, you usually have a great connection. No system is perfect. I've had my wireless connection for 2 years, and I really like it.

Laguna is good but so is Prodigy. I go on at least 3 times a day with no problem. I also amost never get cut off unless I am inactive for a while. I have never had a problem with even very long downloads

I have Prodigy with a phone line just for it; I get on early in the morning and generally leave it connected all day. I count on being cut off twice a day, between 2:00 - 3:00 PM and between 10 PM and midnight (if it's still on). That gives Telmex its allotted 3 calls a day on our measured service. I rarely if ever have any problems with anything on Prodigy dialup; even during long idle times there are no cutoffs other than the two I know will happen.

As they say, your mileage may vary.

Hi Esperanza,

I think that the big difference in quality of Prodigy is almost completely due to problems with phone lines at the houses.

I have left my connection on for hours with no problems (when downloading) but since I only have one phone line I tend to disconnect when I am not at the computer.

Like I said, your mileage may vary.

However, I just changed a friend from Laguna (where she frequently could not connect, frequently was disconnected when she COULD get on, and was lucky to get a page to load in 5 minutes) to Prodigy dialup. Her experience is that Prodigy is light years faster and no disconnects~same phone lines, same computer, different server. Hmmm.

I am a biased observer. I write Tech Talk for the Guadalajara Reporter and to get story ideas answer the help line at Laguna some mornings. I would do the same at prodigy, but they don't have a help office anywhere near Ajijic.

If you have bad telephone wiring, (usually in your house) or a run of the mill modem (which is all that is normally put in a factory built computer) you may have problems.

I've known folks who have had terrible connection problems at Prodigy, hoping that once they came to laguna that they would have better connectivity. They did not. I've known folks who left Laguna for the same reason, never having solved their wiring and/or modem problems wondering why prodigy didn't give them any better service. It's usually not the ISP's fault. But try to explain that to an angry client wondering why s/he is being cut off. I know the type of modem equipment laguna has, its some of the better equipment around meant for areas that have less than perfect telephone connectivity. So when a person phones and complains about being cut off, I know it's not because of the equipment at the ISP. Oh they do cut you off automatically after about 5 or 6 hours. But then most ISPs do that. The problem is usually a poor connection somewhere in the wiring in the house, perhaps in the wall or even in one of the junction boxes. This is a great oversimplification of the situation, but the better the modem, the worse the problem can be before you are cut off.

About two years ago, I had readers send me speed tests done from a server in Dallas www.pcpitstop.com . Prodigy on average downloaded about 5% faster. I'm guessing here, but two weeks ago, prodigy might have had an even greater speed advantage. But then Laguna put in some of the newest equipment available, and my download speed increased significantly.

Remember it's not the original connection speed, but the download speed that counts. From my experience, prodigy will usually have a higher connection speed, but the true download speed from sites in the states seem to be about the same.

It seems that in Ajijic, you either love laguna and hate prodigy or visa versa. There seem to be strong emotions one way or the other. It's hard to find many people who can say nice things about both systems. Personally I would be happy with either service. But because most of my friends are with Laguna, and the staff at Laguna are my friends I chose Laguna.

Pete
