I am a biased observer. I write Tech Talk for the Guadalajara Reporter and to get story ideas answer the help line at Laguna some mornings. I would do the same at prodigy, but they don't have a help office anywhere near Ajijic. If you have bad telephone wiring, (usually in your house) or a run of the mill modem (which is all that is normally put in a factory built computer) you may have problems. I've known folks who have had terrible connection problems at Prodigy, hoping that once they came to laguna that they would have better connectivity. They did not. I've known folks who left Laguna for the same reason, never having solved their wiring and/or modem problems wondering why prodigy didn't give them any better service. It's usually not the ISP's fault. But try to explain that to an angry client wondering why s/he is being cut off. I know the type of modem equipment laguna has, its some of the better equipment around meant for areas that have less than perfect telephone connectivity. So when a person phones and complains about being cut off, I know it's not because of the equipment at the ISP. Oh they do cut you off automatically after about 5 or 6 hours. But then most ISPs do that. The problem is usually a poor connection somewhere in the wiring in the house, perhaps in the wall or even in one of the junction boxes. This is a great oversimplification of the situation, but the better the modem, the worse the problem can be before you are cut off. About two years ago, I had readers send me speed tests done from a server in Dallas www.pcpitstop.com . Prodigy on average downloaded about 5% faster. I'm guessing here, but two weeks ago, prodigy might have had an even greater speed advantage. But then Laguna put in some of the newest equipment available, and my download speed increased significantly. Remember it's not the original connection speed, but the download speed that counts. From my experience, prodigy will usually have a higher connection speed, but the true download speed from sites in the states seem to be about the same. It seems that in Ajijic, you either love laguna and hate prodigy or visa versa. There seem to be strong emotions one way or the other. It's hard to find many people who can say nice things about both systems. Personally I would be happy with either service. But because most of my friends are with Laguna, and the staff at Laguna are my friends I chose Laguna. Pete
