Building Project Update for 29 March 2003

Iniz has finished laying the tile in the 2nd floor north unit and has about one more day to go on the 1st floor north. Then he'll go back and grout the tile in those two condos.

Manolo was laying tile, but he was not too wonderful at it, so we moved him to painting in the south building. He is a good painter and mason, but tile is not is calling.

Rubin is still running his ass off being everybody's helper. In all my years of hanging around construction sites, I have never met anyone like this 21-year old guy -- so full of energy and so smart. He is our best worker and the most intelligent. After this job, I think he should move up to maestro.

This week is one year since Iniz, Manolo and Rubin came to work on the project, so we gave each a raise. Iniz and Manolo are now making $1,500 (pesos) weekly, and Rubin makes $1,000. They started at $1,300 and $700. They got a round of raises at 6 months to $1,400 and $800. In terms of service rendered, I think Rubin should be at $1,500 with the two maestros; but Enrique tells me that would cause friction. So we see to it that Rubin gets some Saturday and Sunday afternoon overtime work. He says he likes the overtime work because when he is at home on weekends, his wife bitches at him if he goes on the street with his buddies. So he had rather be working and drinking beer with us.

Enrique continues the plumbing and general supervising of everything.

We hired another helper this week, Enrique's 18-year old brother-in-law. He's the clean-up man and painting helper doing mostly touch-up stuff. I had to smile when Enrique told me his nickname – Nanny. (That goes on my list along with LaLa milk and Bimbo bread.)

I did not make a website update this week because there was no activity that has not already been pictured.
