Word of the Day

Can't Post | Private Reply
Maybe all of you on this forum already know about this resource but I thought just in case I would post it. This is a site where you can sign up to have a "Word of the Day" in your choice of languages sent to you (Naturally Spanish is one choice). Everyday they will send you an email with a link to the "Word of the Day" site where you can click on the word and hear it spoken and then click on another link to hear it used in a sentence with translation provided. Nice resource for people studying languages.

Go to http://www.transparent.com/ Click on Word of the Day to sign up.

Regards

Zumo versus jugo

I'm really enjoying the "word of the day" site, recommended by Bill, if only as a reminder to keep up my studies! Today, the word "zumo" came through for "juice." When travelling in Mexico, I've always used and have heard "jugo." Is the usage of "zumo" common?

Zumo se usa mucho más en España. Aquí en México, jugo.

Un saludo jugoso,

Although I haven't started my studies of Spanish in earnest yet. My first class starts in two weeks. I understood what you said. Yuma is used a lot in Spain. Here in Mexico, it is jugo. (more or less, I think).

I am glad that some readers are enjoying the "Word of the Day". I really like it although for a beginner, sometimes the sentence showing use of the word is way beyond my capabilities. But it is a nice way to be reminded or learn vocabulary.

Glad you are enjoying it.

En México el zumo de una naranja es la parte blanca de la cascara que da un sabor amargo/acido al jugo.(¡Es creo!)

El Gringo Jalapeno,

I can not speak or read Spanish very much. I will start my lessons next Monday evening. But when I look at your sentence, I translate it like this:

Espanol: En México el zumo de una naranja es la parte blanca de la cascara que da un sabor amargo/acido al jugo.(¡Es creo!)

My translation: In Mexico the juice of the orange includes the white pard of the skin which makes the juice acidic. (It is how it is made!)

How close is my translation?

Muy cerca de lo que aquí decimos en Guadalajara, estimado Roy. Zumo is the name we give to the oils and natural solvents contained in the skin of the fruit with yes, the acid and rather corrosive flavors.

Un saludo cordial,

You are right, Quevedo. It's the oil from the skin of the orange. ¡Eso creo!
