Zihuatanejo Options

Has anyone driven to Zihuatanejo? Several months ago there was a discussion about the condition of the highway out of Morelia. At that time there were concerns about construction. Have repairs been completed? Also, is there another option from Ajijic along the Pacific coast?

To the best of my knowledge, the new highway Morelia-Uruapan-Playa Azul is still incomplete. There is a 30-kilometer detour near Presa Infiernillo which will remain in place until the final stretch is finished. Even with the detour, this route is much faster than it was 5 years ago, when the new highway had hardly been started.

Your alternative to get to Zihuatanejo from Ajijic is to go via the Colima highway, turning off to Tecomán and continuing south-east along coastal highway 200. Parts of this route are very scenic but it is NOT a high-speed road, being only two lanes and winding. Given the distances involved, you may want to stay overnight in either Colima or Tecomán before then driving the next day all the way to Zihuatanejo, arriving by mid-afternoon.

Enjoy your trip!
