I would like to retire in Mexico, somewhere along the coast. Preferably along the pacific. Could someone recommend a location that has this type of population? I plan on sailing around the world but would like to use Mexico as my home base. Any Ideas? Thanks Please respond to my email...

There are so many websites that it is overwhelming to look at all of them and pick a place. Just thought some may have experienced some great places along the coast. Thanks again.

: The Manzanillo area is the oldest port on the west coast of Mexico so there are places to leave your boat if needed. Also there are many nice small villages to the north along the "Happy Coast" like Barra De Navidad, Melaque, San Patricio, and La Manzanilla. Oh, and do not forget the beautiful Bay of Tenacatita where many sailboats pull into to rest on their way south or north!
: Check it out at www.tomzap.com
Thanks so much for the website information. It gives me many options from which to choose. I just want a slower pace of life but still retain some of the simpler amenities of life. I spent time in Mazatlan and just loved the people, culture and food. Not looking to live in a city of that size but something on the village size. Thanks again...

I don't sail, so I am not much of a help, except to tell you, I know many people who dock their boats in Puerto Vallarta during the hurricane season. I've been told by boat owners, they park here because of the lack of bad weather, and their insurance covers their docking there. (PV hasn't had an actual hurrincane in years and years)
A little further north is La Cruz de Huancaxtle, where there is another small marina, very laid back, and village like. I've seem some decent rentals there also for a pretty inexpensive price. Bus from La Cruz to Vallarta is about 14 pesos, so you can get into PV and stock up on supplies at Sam's Club, Walmart, and Mega... or catch a bit of nightlife, and fine dining.
The Bahia de Banderas is beautiful, lots of great fishing, and a close proximity to everything you may be looking for. There are marine shops in PV in case you need a repair, and like I said, between PV and points north, plenty of little villages you could live. Rincon de Guayabitos, Le Peņita, Sayulita, La Cruz, Bucerias.
You may want to look at Bruce Whipperman's Pacific Coast handbook for some ideas. He lists as good amount of info, places to stay, etc. Also do a keyword search for Two Gypsies travel-log- I think they spent a good amount of time in the vallages mentioned above.
Good luck!

If you are planning to do a lot of sailing, you'll probably want to be close to one of the government-sanctioned marinas. I don't know a lot about this, but I understand that certain ports have designations that permit foreign boat owners to leave their boats in Mexico for extended periods without paying import fees for the boats.
These would likely be the larger centres, like Manzanillo, Puerto Vallarta, etc.
If you are interested in locating in such a marina, but in a smaller community, I understand that the marina in Ixtapa is so designated.

Since you are able to sail around the world, I think you can find what you want via the internet, travel books, etc. You don't give much information about your desires. Perhaps you just never took the time to think it through. There are many tourist places, industrial cities and small fishing villages. Your choice. Whatever your desire, it is probably here. Make a list and decide what is important to you. Perhaps, while sailing around the world, you will take some time and learn Spanish if you don't already speak it. It will give you many more options. Good luck and enjoy your travels. Read a lot + Ask good questions= lots of useful information.
