Hi there!

That was a good article! But they didn't mention that you can also take the trip for a one-way Yucatan or Tampa destination, AND that you can take your own car, AND that you also have the freedom to stay in Mérida or travel around, AND without the need of buying "packages" from Yucatan Express.

Last Sunday, I was in the grocery store (San Francisco in Progreso) check-out line behind a VERY nice young man who paid the cashier with a $10 USD bill. (by the way, San Francisco converts at 10:1) ... I asked the young man what in the world he was doing in Progreso, Yucatan, using US dollars in a grocery store... and he said he works on Yucatan Express. We started talking and I said I wish they would have the ferry all year... he said they can't because the ship goes north in the summer... I said I wish they would accept pets... he said they DO !!! He said he had seen pets on board as late as the very Sunday before... but he said that he only sees pets going FROM Yucatan TO the US and not the other way around. Hope that helps somebody...

FYI we spoke to 2 retired couples traveling separately who did the Yucatan Express ferry when we visited Uxmal. One couple brought their car and one didn't. Both were very pleased and highly advised using it.

I am happy to hear they are changing their tactics concerning pets. I talked to a lady who had asked the line about taking pets to Mexico, and management had been very negative. Basically said the pet could be left in the car, but since you can't have access to your vehicle during the trip, you might be left with a dead animal! If the ferry really wants more customers, they should make a point of being pet friendly. All those retired snowbirds have lots of little doggies that are part of the family.

I was in Progreso last week, and was also suprised that the Mayan ladies selling wallets and handmade bags on the sidewalk blankets across the street from the main market building had their prices marked in US dollars!

Yes - and have you noticed the prices beginning to soar? I walked through the stalls at the cultural center when a tourist boat was in and nearly fell over dead at the sight of some of the prices ... and those prices are marked in U.S. dollars too !!! I noticed that very few tourists were buying and I can certainly understand why. I have seen similar imported merchandise in the States for less than is being asked for it HERE !!! This is not a good thing.
