Union Libre - explanation from FM3 rentista form

Can't Post |
Pardon my ignorance, but I was applying for my FM3 rentista visa and on the form there was the marital status question, which included "Union Libre" as one of the choices. Can anyone explain the legality of "Union Libre", is it the same as domestic partners in the US? Same-sex or hetero unions?
By the way, I'm applying in Nogales, Sonora for the FM3 rentista and Mexican Immigration requested bank statements for the last three months, a photocopy of my valid US passport, 8 pictures ( 4 front and 4 right side of face ) and MXN$1380. Also a valid and paid FMT visa. They did make a comment of me being too young (I'm 34) for the rentista, but she just waved her hand and told me to fill out the application, bring it back and it should be ready in 10 days. So, now I'm filling out the application.
I'll inform more as the process continues.

*Union libre* refers to common law marriage. It has nothing whatsoever to do with same-gender relationships.
