Did anyone else feel earth tremors around 8:06 PM tonight?

Can't Post | Private Reply
My wife and I were very surprised to feel several earth tremors at about 8:06 P. M. tonight. We were sitting at the dining room table and felt the building rocking and saw the chandeliers swaying and the water sloshing back and forth in the upside-down 5-gallon water jar--seemed like maybe three waves rolled through. (We grabbed a flashlight and went outside, away from the building for safety, but returned soon since there don't seem to be any more tremors now.)

We recently moved from the San Francisco Bay Area, so are quite confident that we know an earthquake when we feel one. The shock waves may have been magnified by our specific location on what surely is alluvial fill, given that we're in Riberas del Pilar only plus or minus 60 feet from what was the edge of Lake Chapala only two or three decades ago.

Anybody else feel it? Is there a governmental agency in Mexico which monitors and pinpoints epicenters of earthquakes, perhaps similar to the service provided by the US Geological Survey?

Says 7.6 on CNN too. Just hope Colima and Tecoman areas are OK. I don't know much about how depth affects

Frank,

Mexican TV Stations suspended regular broadcasts at 8:06 pm local time to inform about the earthquake, the Seismic Alarm sounded in México City 30 seconds before the waves were felt. The National Seismological Institute and the Centro Nacional de Prevención de Desastres have informed:

Time of Event: 8:03 pm local time (central time)

Epicenter: Colima's coast

Magnitude: 7.6 Richter Scale

Duration: 45 seconds

Damages: Probable physical damages in the State of Colima and the South of Jalisco. Rest of the country OK.

I just heard on the news that there is some damage in Patzcuaro, Michoacan. We also called down to Chupicuaro, Michoacan and they felt it there but there was no damage to my in-laws house.

Ed,

Colima is about 140 miles south-west of Lakeside. Relax, the earthquake was not felt very strongly in Lakeside. Although, in Guadalajara it felt as strong as the one in 1995. Check the link to the CENAPRED http://www.cenapred.unam.mx/.../sismo21ene2003.html

As an old 'quake rider from Los Angeles, let me share this observation -- a slow rolling motion usually means the center was some distance away, and there is no reliable way for you to judge the magnitude without instruments. If the quake arrives with a sharp jolt and a loud noise, it was close and, with experience, you can come close to judging it's magnitude. I was 3 miles from the epicenter of the Northridge quake. It felt and sounded like a fully loaded trailer truck hit the house.

Rolly,

I have only experienced three earthquakes, all of them in Guadalajara (1972, 1995, and now 2003) and all of them over 7.6 in the Richter Scale. I am not an expert on Seismology but, as far as I now, the three I have experienced have been of the Oscillatory type. The 1985 quake in México City was a Trepidatory type earthquake, the most destructive type. The one in 1995 (8.0 Richter Scale) caused the collapse of one hotel in Manzanillo though.

Here is the University web cam and it looks quiet. Often you can see flows coming down the mountain in the dark.

Ed, the USGS at first reported magnitude of 7.3, but now shows it at 7.8, which is a BIG one.

I measure about 100 miles as the proverbial crow flies from Ajijic to the apparent epicenter on the Colima coast, SSW of the city of Colima. Based on my experience in the San Francisco CA area for over 25 years, this earthquake is big enough and close enough to cause some damage Lakeside.

We experienced the movement as rolling, rather than sharp. There is no apparent damage to our reinforced-masonry house in Riberas del Pilar, but only time (for reports to be gathered) will tell whether or not there was damage in the Chapala/Ajijic area.

The quake was sharply felt in our town, Sayula, which is about half way between Guadalajara and Colima. It was a strong rolling quake. I felt stronger when living in the San Francisco Bay Area, but construction here is different. We had a power outage for a couple of hours and some minor damage in town. I expected more damage than what I saw. Will know more about any more damage tomorrow. At our home, we had a couple of brokens vases and some minor plaster cracks in a small area upstairs.

At our home in El Chante there was not any damage, nor in the immediate area that we can tell. The quake was felt as a rolling quake, not the kind where you think a truck hit the house and you hear the boom.

Harry said all he felt was a rolling motion and the chandelier in the dining room swayed. No power outage or phone disruption. He e-mailed me shortly after.

On a weird note I e-mailed back and asked if the dogs alerted him as folklore often reports. He said the old dog slept through it, but the pup was barking at the front door just before it came. So I guess Miss Mordida predicts earthquakes... Or the stray cat was prowling out front again! <G>
