Spanish Immersion Course?

Can't Post |
Hi again,

Has anyone taking a spanish language immersion course in Mexico? What was the experience like? Was it worth your money?

Thanks!

I am particularly interested in the answer to balloftwine's question!

After looking at several schools, and receiving a few recomendations, I seem to be settling on "Cetlalic: Centro Tiahuica de Lenguas e Intercambio Cultural" in Cuernavaca, Morelos. If everything goes according to schedule, I will attend in June '03.

I found them by a referral, and just by doing a spanish language school search on-line. As I recall, you can get to them at www.celtlaic.org.mx

Love to share thoughts and ideas on this subject.

Hello: Two years ago this week, I started studying Spanish at UAG. I started out in level one, advancing at my own pace for four months. I took level two over, so actually I only made it to level three; there are eight levels (months) total.

I really enjoyed the experience, and highly recommend this school to anyone looking to improve their Spanish skills. I also met many new friends from all over the world there, as the UAG program attracts many students from every continent.

The program cost $350 US tuition per month, a homestay with a Mexican family costs $400 US, and that included three meals per day and a private room. I made lifelong friends with my Mexican family, and also made several important business contacts thru them later.

GDL is a large city and was a bit daunting at times, but it was a good first place to land, given its services and many diversions; definately one of the best cities on the continent. I prefer small towns, but it was definately a defining point in my life as I started dating my (now) wife, and thru her was able to move here permanently and start my own business.

You just never know what might happen from a stay in Mexico!

Funny you mention that. I live across from the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara here in San Antonio, Tx. There's a list of courses on there website.

I think it would be better in Mexico, though...you get to experience the "real" culture.

I'm also in the mexican folkloric dance company with the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México extension here in San Antonio. they also offer spanish classes.

My 16 year old daughter went to IMAC in Guadalajara last summer, lived with a family for six weeks. Very noticeable difference. We live in Jocotepec - and she was born in Colombia but attended English speaking schools in the US -- forgot all her Spanish, I'm ashamed to say. IMAC resurrected her latent Spanish language skills. We were very satisfied with the scope and techniques of their methods.

The Universidad Veracruzana in Xalapa, Veracruz, México has a very good School for Foreign Students(Escuela para Estudiantes Extranjeros-EEE).

I spent 2 weeks at Baden-Powell Institute in Morelia last summer and hope to return this year. Wonderful school, excellent attention to student needs, Homestays seemed to be well managed (mine was an excellent experience) and the school was responsive to students' needs in terms of changes (if needed). Teaching staff competent, friendly, professional. US university credit available. Info available at www.baden-powell.com

Named after Robert Baden Powell,
founder of the World Scout Movement,
Chief Scout of the World.
The same one? The name brings fond memories
of my childhood!

What really puts my Joe boxers in a bunch however
is their initial page in which they placed a Castillian
Spanish flag link to access the spanish
language page!
Porqué diablos y en México...tiene sentido??? :<
Additionally they are subtlely implying their teachings are in
castellano and their english classes are taught in UK english.

Vaya Centro de Enseñanza y Cultura!!!

Yes, named after that B-P. The founder (Sr. Eugenio Cortes, also currently a teacher) said he admires B-P's principles and views on the importance of learning about other nations/peoples.

As to the flag - how about the notion that it's there for Spanish nationals who might come to the school to learn English (many of the students are Mexicans who are learning English)? ... :-) ...

I attended this small school in Cuernavaca a few years ago and had a great time. Family stay was $20-25 a day and school was $150 a week (I think). Lots of activities, good teachers and not many students in November. You might want to consider the time of year if you want more attention (fall and spring are slower) ... and the size of the school. I'm considering a school in Patzcuaro in a few months ... only because it's a good way to see a place I've never been.

Hello,

I just found your posting this Am when I went looking to find info on the University-well the location really. I have info on a three bedroom apt. on Guadalupe Ave near the school. Everything in the ad sounds good, but I am trying to get a feel for the area before I pick up and move to Mexico.

The ad talks of being in front of a mall. [No luck with any of the maps on line as to details.] Does this ring a bell? Would you live there? The idea of living with a host family sounds good too.

Thanks in advance for any info or experiences you have time to share.
