Security for House

Can't Post |
We are building a small beach house which unfortuately will not be occupied all the time. We do not want to put bars on the windows. Does anyone have a suggestion as what we could use? Is there a manufacturer for roll up shutters in Mexico?

Not sure about roll-ups, but here in Cozumel all the beachfront houses have accordian hurricane shutters that are very secure against burglary. None of the beachfront homes have bars. The ones that are used seasonally just close up all the windows and doors with the hurricane shutters. All the alumininum shops here sell and install them. Of course in an area not exposed to hurricane threat they may be harder to find. They are easy to close and secure from inside the house. They sell here for around $100 US sq M installed.

Not ever having lived in hurricane territory, I'm not familiar with hurricane shutters in general, let alone those available in Mexico. Doing some webpoking, I encountered these on a NOAA website about hurricane preparedness. Are they what you're talking about, or do you have something different in mind?

Thanks - ET

Here's a house all opened up,........and all closed up.

And heres how they work from inside, or outside.

I didn't see an image in your post

The two things I've seen in the tropics for vacation homes are; sliding wrought iron gates to cover large window or sliding glass doors (requires a track top and bottom) - the design can be as plain or ornate as you want, or rollup doors much like Mexican stores use - but nicer. A couple of places in Belize were two-level and the bottom level used the roll-ups - designed to be an outdoor living area, with kitchen, living, etc (open up as much as you want). A simpler option is just make the "bars" a work of art.
