Monarch Butterflies

Can't Post |
How do I get from San Miguel to see the Monarch Butterflies
near Anganguen, which is east of Morelia?

We(4 of us) will be traveling by bus and continuing on to Morelia and Colima after the Butterflies.

I think we have to stay in the area for an early morning start to view the butterflies...and how horrible is the drive/ride to the viewing site???

Mucho Gracias...Therese

We haven't been to see the monarchs yet ourselves but have checked out the tour companies and decided to do it ourselves. We'll take one of the first class buses from the San Miguel bus depot to Morelia and either rent a car or take a cab or hire a local driver or sign onto a local tour once in the area. (We're both flexible and don't mind hanging loose, figuring we will find some way some how once we get to the general area.) We have a car and might drive ourselves but we prefer taking a bus to a new area the first time until we feel comfortable in the area and have some idea of roads, etc.

We did learn from checking around on the various tours that the butterflies are most active in the early afternoon when the sun is the hottest, not in the early morning, so the trip can be done in one day. In fact the tours we checked out were one-day events, with the visit to the butterflies around 2 pm.

Supposedly the bus ride itself is easy, and the climb up the mountains to the best viewing area can be done slowly, though it is indeed a climb. We also heard that there are three butterfly viewing areas around Morelia, not just one, so you don't have to go to the most travelled one. And, the butterflies are there into February or later, so there's no rush.

One of the one-day tours out of San Miguel is around $50 each if there are four of you, and you have your own car and tour guide/driver for the day, and there are reservations at nice restaurants for lunch ahead of the viewing, and they'll provide canes to use going up the mountain if anyone needs one. Other tours for overnight which stay at a good hotel in the area are, of course, more, but I didn't pay attention to those.

Sounds like it will be fabulous trip--everyone I've talked to who has gone has been highly impressed.

The last time I checked, there was no direct bus from San Miguel de Allende to Morelia. You would need to change in Queretaro or Guanajuato.

The tour guide baed in Morelia whom I recommend is Luis Miguel Lopez Alanis, whose website is http://www.mmg.com.mx/ He can also arrange a pickup in San Miguel de Allende for you, which could be a lot more comfortable than taking the bus.

Carol, if you live in San Miguel de Allende, why not drive to Morelia? You could easily spend the night in Morelia, and then take the tour from here. Or drive yourself to the butterfly refuges and hire a guide on-site.

My wife and I took a tour last Jan/Feb 2002. We did use a tour guide not just a tour guide but an Educator, Historian, and a person that took care of all the details.

All we had to do is board the bus and the hotels & food was taken care of. We also went to the Lava Fields, Pyramids, Macademia Nut Farm, even saw a Gyser, plus the beautiful landscape. We left from Ajijic and returned to Ajijic.

It is a very steep climb but we made it o.k. The bus drive right up to the gates of the Preserve. Would we do it again? darn right and would also use the same Tour Host, Tony Burton. You can find his articles here on Mexconnect.

The Big Chill

After the freeze and death of millions of Monarchs last year, what are the prospects for their return? I have read nothing about their summer breeding numbers.

I just got back from the trip to see the butterflies (oh, and my husband's family too!). There are millions and millions again this year. I've been several times and it still amazes me how many there are. It is worth the trip there from any where in the world!

What you want to do is get to the town of Angangueo. You can do this via bus or private car. Once you are there it's easy. They offer trucks that will take you up and up and up and around and around until you get to the park entrance! About a 30 minute drive up from the main town of Angangueo. I don't recommend driving a private car there or a small taxi since you have to cross a creek with no bridge! I'd take a truck tour which you will see offered all around Angangueo. If you can't find the truck tour for some reason, ask a local, they can tell you. It's a paved road with cobblestones so the ride up is not too bad, just a bit bumpy. Once you are in the park, they just recently started to offer horse rides up to the butterflies. Or you can hike up. It's a little hard, but really worth it. The trails are very well marked. If you go in the morning most likely the butterflies will only be on the tress. I'd recommend going like mid-morning or afternoon. That way you have butterflies flying and on the trees. If you are lucky you can get there as it's warming up and the butterlies on the trees begin to fly and all of a sudden all you see if orange in the sky! That's really cool! So, good luck and it's really worth the trip and all your efforts.
