cell phone coverage in mexico?

Can't Post |
hello,

i was thinking of getting a pre-paid cellular phone through one of the the U.S carriers such as AT&T...does anyone have experience with cell phone service? or would i be better off just getting a calling card down in mexico?

can i get a signal? only in larger cities?

will i be able to get service from a U.S national calling plan down in mexico?

thanks in advance for your help.

Look at verizon.com and you'll find a list of Mexican cities w/ coverage. I got good Verizon signals in Morelia, Pátzcuaro and Uruapan, even though none are listed on the web site.

I brought down a pre-paid cell a few years ago and had a local number put on it in 20min. for the price of a pre-paid card - 200 pesos.

You will be better off getting a prepaid cell phone with a local number in Mexico. With the price of international calls, you don't want to be paying for international roaming if your buddy forgets you are out of the country and wants to go to lunch. Forget taking your US cell phone number to Mexico. If all you want is to call home once in a while from Mexico, the prepaid cards that work in the pay phones are OK, cheaper than calling the USA from a Mexican cell phone. The cell phone coverage in Mexico is pretty good. You can use your current cell phone, or an old one you dig out of a drawer. For more info read my article.
