Vehicle entry problem solved

Can't Post |
While on a recent trip to northeast Mexico, we had an interesting experience obtaining a vehicle entry permit. Despite my bold print “Absolutely do not forget” admonition, the person in whose vehicle we intended to enter Mexico mentally transposed birth certificate with social security card, which he found after a two day search. There was no problem getting the tourist permits at the Nuevo Laredo border office, but we hit the wall on the vehicle permit since they would only take birth certificate, passport, or voter registration card. We were almost ready to head back to Waco where we had another vehicle when a woman told us we could just go to an all night notary in Laredo and get an “affidavit” of US citizenship, and gave us the card of the notary at the Pan American Courts and Café at 3301 San Bernardo. Ready to try anything, we drove back to the US side and found the place. They guy asked the car owner a few questions about his residence, checked his identification, and typed up the affidavit for $25. The affidavit was accepted with no problem, and we got our permit. I presume any notary would prepare the affidavit.

I should add that the border crossing offices at N. Laredo are much faster and friendlier than in the past. I usually crossed at Colombia, but the past two trips did it here and did not regret it.

Bob,

This service is also available at most larger airports.
