Taking liquor on board an airplane

Can't Post |
Does anyone know if it's still acceptable to take unopened liquor on an airplane? I thought I read somewhere that with the new baggage check rules that wouldn't be allowed anymore. Thanks!

If a box cutter can be used as a weapon, how about the jaggered edges of a broken bottle?

The best bet is to check with your airline. After 9/11, the rules were changed, but it seems that they have been changed again, at least on some airlines. And I would advise checking with your airline or travel agent in the country where the flight originates; an agent in the USA, for example, may not know what is allowed by an airline departing from Mexico, and vice versa.

They allow no liquor in carry on luggage. They have allowed it recently in check in luggage, if the bottle was still sealed as purchased. But with new laws that just recently went into effect and all baggage being checked physically or by x-rays, in the U.S., some new advisorys were put out. I don't believe the new rules outlaw it, I believe they say that liquid, among other items, could look like explosives to the x-ray machines and that will then lead to a physical search. Best to check with your airline.

Since 9/11, I've traveled from Mexico on Delta, Continental, American and America West. All have allowed liquor as a carry-on. This includes the flight I took right after the airports were opened after 9/11. I don't check liquor because once I had a bottle stolen from my luggage and found it is not insured by the airlines.

Booze aboard

Can't Post | Private Reply
In April of 2002 we flew from Phoenix to Guad via Aero Mexico with booze bought in the duty free shop. It was hand delivered to us just as we entered the plane.

In June of 2002 we did the same thing via America West and on the return trip carried some tequila back in carry on. Thank God!.......as they had no beverage service.

When we flew out of Guadalajara last month, Mexicana said no bottles of liquor on the carry-ons. The bottle can be broken and used as a weapon. In October, friends flying on American West out of Guadalajara were told the same. In April of last year Allegro Air took away all liquor that was in carry-on bags on our flight to the U.S. They allowed the liquor in the carry-on bags on the flight to Tijuana, but when we transfered to the flight to the U.S. they rechecked the bags. That is when they took it away. I think it is best to check with the airline you will be flying on.

"The bottle can be broken and used as a weapon."

So, buy the "stuff" in a "Plastic" bottle.

"So, transfer to a "Plastic" bottle. "

To transfer to a plastic bottle, you have to break the seal. Then it is considered an open bottle which I understand is not allowed by most, if not all airlines.+++++++++++++++++++++++++

Since you edited your post to read "buy" instead of "transfer" that might be acceptable, but I would still check with the airline before packing.

I have Never flown by airline Without liquor in my carry-on. Never. Anywhere in the world. Always in a plastic soda bottle labeled whatever liquid was originally in it, a corresponding color to whatever I put into it. Usually a good French rosé. Only once was I challenged, about ten years ago, I think in Scandinavia, and they asked me to go to the security office to have it officially sealed. I've never opened it on board an airplane anyway. It's nice to have a sip of wine in your hotel room before going to bed. And I often have those tiny bottles of liquor, usually vodka, in my toiletries/cosmetic carry-on case for my husband or guests to enjoy. Anything bought in the duty free shop has got to be acceptable or they wouldn't be able to sell it or bring it on the airplane.

Air travel rules get flakier by the day. Every international departures terminal has duty free shops. Where's all that booze going, if not as carry on baggage?????

Wouldn't the easiest solution be to purchase a box of zip lock bags, pour the contents of the liquor bottle in several zip lock bags...then freeze it prior to packing your suitcase? I would think that would alleviate the danger of glass on the aircraft. But then again if the bag were emptied someone could possible slip the zip lock bag over the heads of the pilot or co-pilot! Sorry...the more I think about it my solution probably wouldn't fly! But then again if you used the "smaller" zip lock bags maybe it wouldn't be large enough to...never mind!

I thought liquor doesn't freeze. When I have a bottle in my house, I keep in the freezer and it never freezes.

Alcohol does freeze at about -40. Your freezer can't get that cold.

-40 is an interesting number. -40C = -40F. That's were the two scales cross.

Called America West. It's OK to take unopened liquor on board as long as it's not opened during flight.
