Happy Birthday Rolly

Can't Post | Private Reply
I know you are no longer with us Rolly, but I saw on another forum that today would have been another birthday and that if you were still with us that you would be turning 86.
Those of us who knew you, greatly miss you. Thank you so much for all the great information you provided us over the internet over those many years. For those of you who have forgotten or did not know Rolly, when in Mexico, he lived in Lerdo, Durago and was a font of information about Mexico sharing his information on this forum and his own website.
For those of you who knew him better perhaps you might want to add more fond memories or correct any information I posted above.

Thanks, Pete, for posting about ROLLY BROOK DAY 2017.
20 August 2017 was the day when our dear departed Rolly would have celebrated his 86th birthday.
For new readers who want the backstory and are unfamiliar with Rolly's incredible contributions to this and other forums about Mexico over many years, see

It's still hard to believe that he's gone. I miss him so much. Funny, we never met face to face--but we were certainly good friends. QEPD dear Rolly.

Death is nothing at all.
It does not count.
I have only slipped away into the next room.
Nothing has happened.
Everything remains exactly as it was.
I am I, and you are you,
and the old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged.
Whatever we were to each other, that we are still.
Call me by the old familiar name.
Speak of me in the easy way which you always used.
Put no difference into your tone.
Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow.
Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes that we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.
Let my name be ever the household word that it always was.
Let it be spoken without an effort, without the ghost of a shadow upon it.
Life means all that it ever meant.
It is the same as it ever was.
There is absolute and unbroken continuity.
What is this death but a negligible accident?
Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight?
I am but waiting for you, for an interval,
somewhere very near,
just round the corner.
All is well.
Nothing is hurt; nothing is lost.
One brief moment and all will be as it was before.
How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting when we meet again!

Happy 86th Rolly,

I and others miss you a lot. You've probably seen my little "Mexigringa" grow so tall and full of life. "Angi" keeps me going as does my wonderful wife, Jimena. Funny but I feel your presence many times when I need an answer or two to learn more about México and the culture. Keep sending me those messages Rolly. By the way I hope you still have that taste for a good big aged Dill Pickle because I still have that one I was supposed to bring to you when I would pass close to Torreón, Durango, México. Well . . . . . . . it's still on the shelf Rolly, it has really aged! .. . . . . . I'm afraid to open it now . . . . . . I'm rounding the curve in the road myself now, and will bring it to you when I get there. You're in my prayers Rolly, my friend.
Best Regards
God Bless
"Angi", Ana Sofia, Jimena and Myself

By the way . . . . . . . has anyone heard from Nery, or any of Rolly's other students? I haven't for about three years now.

I'm reminded that Mexicans believe death occurs in three stages.
The first is when you take your last breath
The second stage is when you are laid to rest
and the third and final act is when the last person on earth who has memories of you passes on.
It will be many, many decades before Rolly is truly gone.

Good to see activity on this topic. Although I never met Rolly, I felt like I knew him. He was a great person and was a great source of information. He was sort of like a Mr. Google who had the correct answer on almost an question about Mexico you needed. I say for the umpteenth time we sure do miss him.
And if somehow you can read this Rolly, thank you for all the help and great information you provided all of those who knew you.

In such a screwed up world i take great solace in thinking about a wonderful human being like Rolly.

We could use a billion of him.
