Melaque or Barra?

Can't Post | Private Reply
Planning a month's vacation this summer or fall to Barra de Navidad area to research the future of retiring to the area. My request here is to get opinions from those who spend time or live in the area about which town, Barra or Melaque, would be a better base for us to vacation (ocean/sunset views, walks on beach and to markets/restaurants, etc.) as well as do our research (renting a car to drive to other areas, talk to locals and expats, look into more permanent rental options, etc.)?

Any opinions/reviews about hotels or vacation rentals in either town would be great, too!

Thanks!

Mimi

I live just outside Melaque and have been here for 10 years.

Melaque is almost 3 times larger than Barra with more shopping and many more hotels/motels. Melaque has the only bank in the area but Barra has an ATM machine.

Seriously consider air conditioning if you are not used to the heat and humidity. It's comfortable here now but summer into October it's quite warm.

Google Tomzap for info and a message board for the area.

Have been traveling to Melaque and Barra since i was a kid, Barra de Navidad is more developed, like any tourist destination. Reccommendation, stay in Barra, have a car to go to Melaque and all the beaches in the way to Puerto Vallarta. here some info Barra de Navidad Mexico

Hola Mimi,
Not sure if you are here yet, but if you are still driving down you may want to consider turning in at El Tuito and checking out Cabo Corrientes on your way south. The area of Mayto and Tehuamixtle are stunning especially in the summer when it's so green and the ocean is very calm and warm. Our community is small by Barra/Melaque standards at 200 people, but they are incredibly welcoming. There are several places to stay in both Mayto and Tehua and great seafood restaurants on the beach and in the fishing cove.
Have fun and drive safely!

Was in Tehua and Mayto yesterday, all very green, but a shortage of oysters, with El Niño.
