For Those Considering Driving the Northern Corridor

We decided in 2010 that we were not comfortable with "events" happening along the Santa Teresa - Chihuahua - Torreon - Torreon - Zacatecas corridor heading for the Guadalajara area and the rest of Central Mexico. So we have been flying into Guadalajara and doing the rental car thing out of there.

Read a story yesterday detailing an event that to my knowledge has never happened before in this part of Northern Mexico:

This move isn't intended to protect Gringos coming down from the north but I would say that it does indicate that there are some serious violence issues along this corridor? YMMV but we won't be driving this corridor in the future until we see concrete evidence that things have improved!

The government has been running protection convoys in Tamaulipus between the border and Tampico. That program has been running for almost 5 years.

So true but I have never seen this program being operated along this corridor. I have long contended that there have been ongoing problems along this route and these actions seems to confirm such?

So many Mexicans travel from the USA to visit their families in Mexico for Christmas, that many of them have been hijacked and relieved of their gift-laden cargo and/or vehicle along the way. That is the main purpose of these escorted convoys, which have been offered for many years.

When was the last time you crossed at the Santa Teresa/San Jeronimo border crossing and driven this particular corridor?
