Mezcalero

As some of you may know, when David Bodwell became too ill to continue running his bookstore and publishing business, I was given control of the company. While I was able to quickly sell the bookstore (to Leslie Lopez, who had been managing the store for several months previously), before publishing could be resumed there were some unexpected legal and financial issues that needed resolved. I also had my own business to attend to (moving to Mexico City, getting married, some family business, a book to rewrite) which meant it took two years instead of the expected six months to get the first book out from Montezuma Books.

There are still some minor details to work out in the business, mostly having to do with the distributor, but we have put out the "advance" edition of T.E. Wilson's "Mezcalero" ... the first of several books scheduled originally for 2015, but more likely to be published in early 2016.

"Mezcalero", by Canadian journalist and Mazatlan part-year resident T.E. Wilson, features detective Ernesto Sánchez, the first transgender private detective in fiction. Like any good detective novel, the story is more than just the search for the missing person. Ernesto, born Cristiana, the daughter of a Mexican narco, has reinvented herself in Canada as Ernesto, a Canadian policeman. His past becoming known, he flees suburban Toronto for a run-down apartment in gentrified Roma Norte and a marginal job as a private detective. A call from his mother in Canada leads to a job tracking down a missing Canadian woman in the Costa Chica ... the search for Cinnamon Taylor becoming a search for Ernesto... and his identify as a stranger in his own land as he interacts with narcos, tourists, a hungry crocodile, Zapatistas, curandaros, and a dog named Bill Clinton.

Transitioning is difficult, for people and companies. Creating Montezuma Books was more of a challenge, and took much longer than expected. With "Mezcalero" under consideration for some book prizes, we had to rush into publication by November to meet the deadlines. Apologies in advance for
"typos" in the first printing, and for problems we're having with our distributor (it'll be on Amazon, Chapters, etc. as soon as we work them out, probably within a week or two; Kindle editions within the month), but we have made the book available NOW by mail order: 19.95 US for Canada and US, 335 MXP, payment by paypal: montezumabooks@hotmail.com

It looks like a great book – it combines some of my favourite genres. I will look forward to reading it. Do the mail order prices include shipping? And do you know what the Kindle price is going to be?

Price includes shipping (U.S., Canada, Mexico). Kindle price TBD. It's a deal with the devil to work with Amazon: they determine pricing..
