one week vacation in Tulum - do I need a rental car?

Can't Post | Private Reply
Hi,
We're a family of 4, going to Tulum for one week, flying into Cancun.
Will we need a rental car to get around or can we get by with public transportation?

We've stayed in Sayulita on the Pacific coast before and it was very easy, and fun, to get around by bus. Never had to wait more than 20min. for a bus.

Can we expect the same in Tulum or is a rental car really a must if you don't want to be stuck in your hotel the whole week?

Thanks,
Ruben.

The public transportation is great in Quintana Roo and Yucatan states. There are the buses of course, but there are also shuttles (I forget the Spanish name atm) that are very cheap and run constantly along the main road from Tulum to PDC to Cancun. We went there in May for a wedding, which was in Playa actually, but spent ten days traveling around the region. I had thought about renting a car, but am glad we didn't. No need. While in Tulum, and depending upon where you stay and how old your kids are, rent bikes to ride to the beach. Take the bus to Coba. Taken the shuttle to the cenotes and then further onto Playa del Carmen, etc etc. Tons to do. Have fun!

Roberth is correct, public transportation is very good. I should use it more often.

The shuttles are called "collectivo's"

If you need a car you can always rent it for a day or two.
