New "Puerta Mexico" pedestrian crossing into Tijuana

New "Puerta Mexico" pedestrian crossing from US into Tijuana officially opens today, according to "Frontera" newspaper. They did a trial last Friday. As soon as you enter the new building, there are signs "Mexicanos" and "Extranjeros". As a permanent resident, not a citizen of Mexico, I was going to choose the "Extranjeros" lane, but an attending official directed me to "Mexicanos" lane instead. I guess, the "Extranjeros" lane is more for people who need stamps, or other personalized attention. The "Mexicanos" lane is a wide passthru with no clear immigration check. Further down, after making a few turns, one goes through a modernized customs section.
To avoid any problems, I would suggest carrying a passport, not just your Residente visa, at least until the smoke settles down, and the newly hired officials losen up.
