Status required to register title of Mexican plated car

My wife and I have applied for and been granted a permanent resident visa for Mexico. We went to pick up our visas today at the Mexican consulate and there is a temporary single entry visa now on a page in our passports. We were told that once we arrive in Mexico, we must report to immigration within 30 days to apply for our actual permanent resident cards.

With rental cars being so costly our question is please: What is the soonest possible point in time for us to be able to buy a Mexican registered vehicle and have title transferred and plated in our name?

Would it be...

- As soon as we arrive with our temporary one-time entry visa?
or
- After we report to immigration to apply for our permanent resident cards?
or
- Only when we receive our actual permanent resident cards?

Thank you for your reply. The state is Quintana Roo. In Quintana Roo we were told we cannot transfer title of a Mexican registered car into our name on a tourist visa.

So still seeking a definitive answer from someone please, to at which stage of our process we can do this. Naturally we have to be careful, because if we buy a car and can't transfer title, well that would not be good.

You don't have a tourist permit, you have a residency visa. Residents can purchase a car and title the vehicles in QRoo. Once you have your NUT# you should be good to go.

What city are you going to live in?

We will be living in Puerto Aventuras and doing business in Playa del Carmen.

We were told we can't get a NUT# until after we receive our official resident cards, which could take several weeks after we report to INM to apply for them. I didn't know we needed a NUT# to title a car in our name.

So I take it from your reply, that even though we will be residents, or residents in process until we get our cards, we won't be able to transfer title until we have a NUT#?

You will get the NUT letter when you complete your application for the actual visa card. That letter allows you to travel within Mexico, in lieu of a visa.
You may register an automobile when you have the actual visa card. Meanwhile, you are in “tramite“; in process.
If you are purchasing a new car from a dealership, you might go ahead and buy it, but not take possession until registration can be done. In that event, I would ask the dealership for the loan of a used car for those weeks. They might just do it, or at a very minimal charge. Worth a try?

Puerto Adventuras is in Solidaridad. The Hacienda office is in Playa del Carmen at Avienda 15 and Calle 1 sur. Once you report to INM in Playa, go to Hacienda with your paperwork and ask if you can buy a car. They will give you the definitive answer you seek.
