Just in case anybody is curious: I finally got my papers taken care of thanks to good old-fashioned nepotism. One of my in-laws, who works for a government agency in Q_Roo, has a friend-of-a-friend who works for the INM. And that individual agreed (for a substantial fee, of course) to meet me in Subtte. Lopez and walk me through everything. And even with inside help, the whole thing almost fell through at the last minute when the bank employee started freaking out over a trivial (and totally imaginary) problem with my car papers. Anyhow, my advice for anybody else who is planning to try it would be: Do NOT assume it's a slam-dunk Do expect to pay a large "tip" Don't wait until the last minute, and allow yourself plenty of time Assume that Murphy's Law is operating at maximum level.
