Phoning into Mexico

Can't Post |
The answer to this (unoriginal) question is probably all throughout these threads, but I'm too lazy to search, so I'll ask it again. Comparative telephone rates — for simply calling from the states (at home) into Mexico. Are there any best kept secrets for low rates? And what's the easiest way to find out which prefix (?) numbers are needed?

The immigrants know all the secrets. Just asks them. Then do them a favor in return.

They purchase phone cards from a Mexican store or or some other business which serves immigrants. The difference in costs from your normal long distance service is amazing. Generally a 30 min. calling card to Mexico goes for $5. But asking around can get some better buys, I recently got 45 min. for $4. If you are picky you can also ask about the quality and clarity of the connections.

Garry,

You might try BigZoo.com. Great rates. We've used this LD service for more than 2 years without a glitch. Calls from the US to Mexico are in the 13 to 15 cents per minute range depending on what part of Mexico you're calling. Rates for calling around the US are also pretty unbeatable.

Garry, you did not indicate where you live, if in Canada, I use Yak (10-15-945) for 25cents CDN a minute and it's put on your telephone bill. I also use cards in the last 5 years, I may have lost a total of $15.CDN on cards. They have all kinds of conditions normally, the best is the no fees, 6 month expiry such as Ci Ci, in Canada and US, I purchase them in Canada, don't know if they are sold in the US.

That "touche" above was to ET, by the way.

OK, here's part 2 of my question. Do the phone cards you buy in Mexico work well for calling the U.S.? What is it, TelMex and Ladatel? Any pros or cons, economic or operational tips? My understanding is you have to have the right card for the right pay phone...right?

The Mexican phone cards you buy in the USA are a scam. They have a fee that is charged every time you use the card, typically $2.50. Most immigrants are not wise to this kind of robbery.

Consider 10-10-220. Or your phone company's program for international calling. AT&T used to have a "Favored Nation" or "Reach out Mexico" program which yielded favorable rates back in the Dark Ages when I lived in the U.S. Much better than calling cards.

Is it true that Mexico has two kinds of pay phones?

Net2Phone calling card rate is around 17 cents a minute. Phone to Phone.

I've seen at least 4 kinds of pay phones in Mexico: the ubiquitous LADATEL pay phone, which requires the use of a prepaid phone card that you can buy in nearly any newsstand, papelería, corner store, pharmacy, or Telmex office; the old standard out-on-the-street coin-operated pay phone, which used to be everywhere but which is fast disappearing from the scene; a coin-operated pay phone of a sort installed in a hotel lobby, where you put in the appropriate coins once the call is actually connected (which gave rise to a dicho which is rapidly becoming archaic~ask me if you're interested); and a kind of phone that is installed, for example, in the store on the corner nearest me~a big handset which is coin-operated and generates a little income for the store owner. These last two might only be useful for local or nearby long distance calling; I've never used either of them to try to call farther away than the next town from where I am.

That is correct. Buy the Ladatel card. I bought a card called El Tucan once, and I've only been able to use it at the pay phone outside the hotel where I bought it, so don't buy that one. I'm sure there are other phones where it can be used, but who wants to waste time searching for one? The Ladatel phones are everywhere.

Ah: The joys of MLM. GDY has posted a website with phone cards that round your call up by 3 minutes. And I thought that the Telcoms were robbers. Or how about 49 cents a week for the privilege of keeping the card in your pocket. Better to use telmex.
