Hotel "hacienda"

Can't Post | Private Reply
Hello everyone,

I am planning a trip to Mexico but I would love to find a specific type of Hotel, like an "hacienda" (I guess that's how they call it). Do you know any hotel or maybe a private house that can be rented by tourists? Like this one I found on San Miguel de Allende...

It's my first trip to Mexico and I would love to hear some recommendations.

thank you very much for your help!

Other than your mention of San Miguel de Allende, you really don't provide adequate information on any other city or area of Mexico you plan to visit. We have stayed in any number of hotels around the country that were originally haciendas. The quality of stays can vary depending on just how the conversions were done and the planning for modern conveniences.

Using a loose definition of "hacienda", here are four examples of large older homes or estates that have been turned into hotels:
San Miguel de Allende Best Western:

Patzcuaro:

Oaxaca:

Queretaro:
https://plus.google.com/.../6050166738348040481

In our opinion, these were all more than adequate conversions and wouldn't hesitate to stay in each of them again! Since we prefer this style of hotels when traveling, we have made a few poor choices and file that info away for future reference.

When choosing hotels in Mexico, while we really prefer hotels in the city centers because we so enjoy walking to and from dinner and having that "centro experience", one is at risk to be forced to enjoy a certain noise level. We read reviews on TripAdvisor and watch for comments about noise and I have also found that "driving the neighborhood" using Google Street View helps me understand the general area.

One of the primary reasons we prefer some of the hacienda style hotels is that they usually offer an open air seating area where we can enjoy morning coffees or wine/cocktails in the evening before heading out to dinner. Rooms will often be larger and we watch for ammenities like a fireplace, especially during the cooler months. Since we tend to use http://www.booking.com we look closely at their photos and also those on TripAdvisor for an overall impression what a hotel is like. When reading reviews on TripAdvisor, we watch for comments about the quality of beds, hot/cold water supplies, cleanliness and air circulation but also pay attention to the experience level and maturity of reviewers and their overall track record of handing out ratings. Another consideration for us since we drive everywhere is the parking arrangements at the hotel. In some of the larger cities, this can be a very important consideration as one can find themselves paying dearly for secure parking.

You may find items of interest in our photo albums that might assist you in your planning:
https://plus.google.com/...9599975173363/albums
I apologize that these are not strictly Mexico related albums but the greatest percentage are from travels in Mexico. While you cannot see the entire album title until you open it - you will see that I have identified geographic locations in the full title.

Have fun, relax and enjoy the cultures of Mexico!

Neil
