Puerto Vallarta " I'm shocked"!!!

Can't Post | Private Reply
I have to say I'm the first one to discount fear mongering with regard to Mexico. Afterall I've lived here for 10 years and celebrate my initial trip here 52 years ago. I LOVE MEXICO!
We arrived from el campo early this morning, 4:00am. I put hubby on a bus to Guadalajara for dental issues. I drove past my favorite taco stand and noticed the HSBC had been bombed or burned. I was pulling into Plaza Caracol when dozen of Black Suburbans with sirens surrounded the mall and hundreds of armed men ran with guns high. This got my attention and I re-organized my errand itinerary for the day. My husband sent a text with photos of burning trucks and said his bus hadn't moved in over an hour. "That's odd"! I passed Santander and Bannorte on Fransisco Villa, both bombed. Next text said get cash, gas & water, so naturally I headed to Costco. The ATM was out of $$. I quickly grabbed a few important items as if I was anticipating a hurricane.....coffee & nuts! I was the last customer escorted out of the emergency door and locked parking lot gates. I risked a quick stop at Banamex tapping my foot and look like a convict as I waited for the guy in front of me to finish up. Too late for gas, the Pemex stations were all closed down, damn why didn't I think to do that 1st. 1/2 tank will not get me to Mayto. I head back to my hot, buggy room that I was psyched to have gotten so cheap, afterall I wasn't planning on spending anytime in it. Helicopters are buzzing the beach, not reassuring. I've searched all of the news outlets online and on the tube~ nothing, absolutely nothing about what's happening. I thinking somehow I stepped into a different dimension......and if it's ok now I'm ready to go back to the one where I just milk goats & tend the chickens.

You were in the proverbial "wrong place at the wrong time."

What I find interesting is that there is no discussion on this situation which has dramatically impacted people's perceptions of safety in PV.

Doesn't bother us any, we won't be coming down to La Peņita until the end on October for our 6 month stay in La Peņita RV park. We will also travel where and when we want to, but heeding warnings from our Mexican friends.

Isabel, I've been watching Mexconnect for comments about May 1, 2015 in Jalisco. Yours are the first. I'm sorry that you were caught in the middle of the mayhem; I followed it all that day and was more shocked at the lack of concern among foreigners (on this board and on other sites) about the gravity of what was happening.

The general attitude seems to be "none of that affects me". I strongly disagree; even though most posters here weren't caught in the middle--as you were--EVERYONE is affected. We all need to remember John Donne: "Do not ask for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee." One way or another, the nationwide violence in Mexico impacts every single one of us.

If you want to read more about it--in English--here's a link. Scroll down to see the articles from May 1.

My heart and mind are pained by what you and Jalisco experienced.

Why would you be so shocked over the lack of reaction from the resident along the north shore of Lake Chapala? What percentage do you estimate of the residents who actually have guts enough to even venture into Guadalajara? From my research, the closest problems to the lake were located at the Ixtlahuacan junction and also somewhere outside of Jocotepec. Therefore, easy to say it didn't affect them, so therefore it was a non-event.

There was quite a bit of discussion on Puerto Vallarta Forums such as Vallarta Scene.

(Trip Advisor had a lot of discussion: a small bit of it informative).

We live very near the area of Puerto Vallarta affected. Since we are currently travelling I searched You Tube, Forums, asked people etc., and was personally reassured. Especially reassuring was the fact that in every reported case, the people setting rhe fires were very careful to get any people out of the buildings in advance. (Also, of course, banks were closed).

Here's a link to an account of an incident on Saturday, May 2nd.

It must have been quite the day though: May 1st. I am not minimizing your shock Isobel.

I have been in Los Angeles and Texas the last week or so doing my car thing. There has been no reporting of this in the LA Times and other newspapers. Most of my friends here had not heard of anything out of Jalisco. It is almost like there is a news blackout of the incident in PV

I drove up to Autlan on business this morning, that area starting to look like a staging are for an military offensive. Hundreds of federal police and military in the municipal area, helicopters landing in the sports complex. My bet is the government will begin "operation Jalisco" soon and with full force. The cartel will respond with more diversions of the type seen last week.

Playaboy, the trouble covered most of the state, not only Puerto Vallarta. The US State Department instantly put out a red alert for travel to Jalisco. Go back up to my last post here and read the link I posted.

The reported toll: seven dead, nearly 20 injured, 39 or more road blocks all over the state, commandeered and burned vehicles on many highways, banks bombed, gas stations bombed, and a Federal helicopter forced down, with three Federal police killed and three missing.
