Bus travel at Christmas--How necessary is advance purchase?

Can't Post | Private Reply
I'll be traveling from Guadalajara to the Puerto Vallarta area a couple of days before Christmas. Thinking about taking the bus because I find the drive tedious. I've always read that the only two times a year it's necessary to buy a ticket in advance are Christmas and Easter, but I've never traveled by bus during the holidays. How true is that? Generally, grabbing a bus between the two cities is as easy as falling off a bar stool, and I prefer to just rock on up to the station and buy a ticket for the next departure. I like the flexibility, but if it's really necessary to secure a seat in advance, I'll do it.

Also, I'll probably be returning around Monday or Tuesday the 29th/30th. Have the loads lightened by then? Thanks for any replies from those who've traveled by bus over Christmas.
