My wife heard on the radio news yesterday that some chains are planning on leaving Guerrero including Bimbo, Comercial Mexicana and Walmart.

Unfortunately, this is 'cold' news--i.e., it was an open secret even prior to the disappearances of the 43 students. If anyone reading this is a Facebook member, go find my FB page--Cristina Potters--and read the many, many articles in English and Spanish that I have posted since the end of September. Heartbreaking...and infuriating.

Last Friday the (Mexican) Attorney General, Jesus Murillo Karam, engaged in a long press conference designed to tell all, or at least all the GOM was prepared to tell, about the missing 43 student teachers. Part of the report was that some of the remains found in Guerrero were indeed of some of the "normalistas." Then came early this week the finding of forensic experts brought in from Argentina by the GOM who said, oops, no DNA connection between any of the parents of the missing and the remains.

With indignation rising throughout Mexico, demonstrations in just about every city and many pueblitos, even down here in Yucatan, some of the demonstrations are recalling not only these deaths, product of political - drug traffic collousion, but so many other brutal acts, going back to the many Cd. Juarez young women -- thousands? -- who disappeared with the backdrop of governmental indifference. (Many said to have been killed in "snuff" films.)

Governmental officials were on the semi-official TV (such as Televisa) news urging the end of violent attacks on state governmental offices, etc., saying that violence is not the way. Unfortunately, the Mexican polity does not seem to take notice of candle light marches.

Other recently uncovered scandals have only added fuel to the fire. Even Peña Nieto had to back down from his give away of a D.F.-Queretaro railroad construction and equipment purchase contract for Chinese firms linked to persons associated with Pres. Peña, after the reporter Carmen Aristegui, MVS network, SinEmbargo, and Proceso all attacked the sweet-heart deal. And the news broke on the $USD 7 million home the President's actress wife had received as a "gift" from Televisa.

I don't know why it's worse that a foreigner was killed... or a priest, as opposed to an environmentalist, or student leader, or... but it seems that not being a from a "white" country, his disappearance was never really adequately covered by the foreign media (some in the Catholic press, but that's about it). When you come down to it, blaming the disappearances on "drug cartels" is an evasion. They are simply the instrument by which the status quo has chosen to maintain control.

I try to follow the news but I'd never heard of this case.
They're saying he was killed for refusing to baptize the son of a narco??

when a foreigner gets killed his country of origin and his compatriots are the ones making a stink. Uganda has its own problems and the man I assume was black so it all disappeared. Sad but it is reality.
True every life is important and it is sad that the life of a man dedicateting his lige to teh poor and their religion diasappeared without anyone in the press or his country noticing it
