October 11, 2002 -- A security consulting group headed by former Mayor Rudy Giuliani will advise Mexico City police on how to make that city safer, Giuliani said yesterday.
The Giuliani Group will help Mexico City police implement some of the same tactics used to reduce crime during his two terms as mayor, Giuliani said at a news conference. The Yucatan Express offers vacationers the opportunity to take their own
vehicles -- car, RV, motorcycle -- even their boat, to explore the Yucatan
Peninsula. Vehicle fares start at just $298 per round trip for a standard
car. In addition to personal vehicles, the Yucatan Express will also
transport freight including trailers, pallets and refrigerated units.
All basic Cruise-Hotel vacation packages include a Category 6 "Economy"

They will not be selling it at the port. She gave me a number to call to purchase the insurance and it was 800-434-3966. I was also told that if anyone is not interested in purchasing the meal package, food would be sold ala carte. The insurance company they recommend apparently worked with them on the previous ferry service.Need to purchase insurance before taking the car of the ferry, unless they figure out a way to let you run into Progreso to pick up some, that would probably be the cheapest.

Thanksvery short term insurance is very expensive, for more than 30 days, it's worth taking out a full year policy

If this thing doesn't leave port (a BIG possibility), wouldn't you rather book with the ship's operator (Scotia Prince)? The other website hawking this service (www.mexicoferry.com) is a travel agency with a fancy website. Should you find yourself without a ship to sail on, how easy do you think it will be to get your money back from this virtual agency? Sure, it's pathetic that www.yucatanexpress.com still does not have pricing info (other than a press release on its site), but that's not a good enough reason to book with an unknown third party. THINK ABOUT IT!

We spoke to them and they didn't know about the car permits. When bringing your car into the state of QR you don't need a permit as long as you don't leave the state, if you do you'll need to go down to the Belize border, quite a trip. We would love to see permits issued at the dock, save us a long trip. Also we called the insurance company they recommened at the quote was very high compared to the rates we have been getting.

Empress Cruise Lines announced plans for a ferry in 1996 but went bankrupt. American Viking Lines operated a ferry service during the winter of 1998-1999, chartering the Scotia Prince ship. Alledgedly the attempt was poorly advertised and funded and ran out of money. Scotia Prince claims they will spend "seven figures" during the next six months to publicize the service, advertising in newspapers and magazines, by direct mail and some television time. NOTE: I'm still looking for the first of the seven figures being spent.The defunct Anerican Viking line was handled by
Scand-America International which also promotes the new service under the name MexicoFerry.com as a sales agent for the ship's operator Scotia Prince Cruises.Scand-America International is located in Tampa, Florida and if I have a problem it's close enough for me to bang their door in. In addition cancelling a visa charge is as easy as 1,2,3.Obviously mexicoferry has an IN with Scotia Prince otherwise it would be hard to explain why their promotional website has all the required info a long time before yucatanexpress.Ironically mayaline.com is also online claiming departures in November without any other news.Inaugural cruises have a tendency to get sold out fast. What about car permits in Progreso? They can't be serious about going to Chetumal.: We spoke to them and they didn't know about the car permits. When bringing your car into the state of QR you don't need a permit as long as you don't leave the state, if you do you'll need to go down to the Belize border, quite a trip.

Turn out there is a IITV modulos in Progreso, but not Cancun. If you arrive in Cancun, you do not need an import permit if you stay in the state of Quintana Roo (a zona libre). Otherwise, you will need to drive to Chetumal or Progreso to get one.
