SMA questions

I lived in SMA 10 years ago. Great experience.
I would like to hear from anyone there that could put some perspective in changes over the past 10 years.
Crime comparison
House/condo price and rental comparison
Locals attitudes towards expats

Thinking or moving back.
Thanks

Perfect forum name to consider moving back to San Miguel de Allende. Might wish to stay away from the Pescau Restaurante for a while?

In addition to what you might learn here, you might want to consider joining the local SMA List... It is a Yahoo Groups list called Civil_SMA (that is an underscore between the two words).

There are so many blogs written about SMA that you're likely to find some useful information in those. I wasn't here 10 years ago, but I understand some wealthy Texans have been replaced by some wealthy DFers.

Being ranked #1 in the Conde Nast Travellers' reader poll last year will probably change tourism. A new convention center is being built just off the Salida a Celaya and there's talk that an art museum will be built. A department store (Coppel's) has been built near El Centro just off the Ancha - some people thought that would be the end of San Miguel, but the town is still here despite the new construction.

There's a Starbuck's just off the Jardin, and despite much hand-wringing at the time of the store's opening, the Jardin remains in place and doesn't appear to be littered with trash.

If you read the Civil List, you might do so with a grain of salt as there's good information, disinformation and misinformation on it.

Probably the biggest news is that the price of pollo rostizado has risen significantly this year, from 60 pesos to 75 pesos in some shops.

You might want to find the bilingual Atencion online - past issues of the weekly newspaper might bring you up to date.

We have lived in SMA for 6 years and previously Ajijic for a year. My husband is Canadian and daughter 9. Happy to help.

Awhile back, I was banned from the Civil list for allegedly violating the prohibition against political messages. In fact, I was writing about the rise in the crime rate and possible links to powerful figures in the town. It has taken awhile but events are beginning to reveal the sinister side of the beautiful community. The words of one of my favorite songs comes to mind: "This is the end of the innocence"
